Demographic and Economic Research

Demographic Reports - Small area housing, population, development, and land use information. Estimates and projections of data presented by supervisor district, planning district, human services region, and census tract and block group.

Fairfax County Rental Housing Complex Analysis - Report summarizing rental housing complex characteristics and trends. Provides information about rents and vacancy rates by geography, structure type and age of complex. Selected individual project data are provided.

Residential Condominium Housing Projects - An Excel file listing residential condominium projects in Fairfax County. For each complex, the following information is provided: project name, subdivision number, primary neighborhood, type, year built, numbers of units by type, total units, supervisor district, planning district, and land area.

Underutilized Residential Land - An Excel file listing all vacant and underutilized land parcels planned for residential use. For each parcel, the report provides the map reference number, total acres, existing housing units, existing commercial gross floor area, year built, planned land use, existing land use, current zoning, and location description.

Office Structures Information - An Excel file listing office buildings in Fairfax County by type of structure. For each parcel, the report provides the structure type, property name, gross floor area, map reference number, assessment element, and year built.

Wholesale and Warehouse Storage Facilities - An Excel file listing parcels that contain wholesale and warehouse storage facilities. For each parcel, the report provides the structure type, property name, gross floor area, map reference number, assessment element, and year built.

Vacant Parcels Planned for Commercial/Industrial Use - A listing of vacant land parcels planned for commercial or industrial use. For each parcel, the report provides the map reference number, total acres, planned land use, existing land use, current zoning, and location description.

Fairfax County Youth Survey – Reports discussing information and trends about positive and harmful youth behaviors.  The information in these reports are gathered through a comprehensive, anonymous, and voluntary survey of public school youth that examines risk and protective factors and various health behaviors that influence the health and well-being of the county’s youth.

Putting Food on the Table: Food Security and Access to Affordable and Nutritious Food in the Fairfax-Falls Church Area (2011) - This study provides a glimpse into food security and access issues in the Fairfax-Falls Church area.  Two of the programs that help increase food security for low-income households are examined (SNAP and the Free- and Reduced-Price Lunch Program), as well as, information on hunger collected by surveys of sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth grade students.  In addition, the study examines the access that low-income residents have to food sources.

Behind the Headline:  Trends and Implications for County Residents (2011) - The latest American Community Survey ranked Fairfax County as one of the wealthiest counties in the nation.  The headline obscures recent census and other data about the economic challenges faced by a growing number of county residents.  The report looks at general trends, the suburbanization of poverty, economic mobility, housing and health care coverage.

Maps Showing Language Spoken at Home by Fairfax County Elementary School Students (2009)  - Over 100 different languages are spoken by Fairfax County households.  This map series provides some insights on where households speaking various languages reside in Fairfax County by depicting the geographic distribution of Fairfax County elementary students who speak languages other than English at home.  Due to the large number of languages spoken in Fairfax County only selected languages are available.

Anticipating the Future: A Discussion of Trends in Fairfax County (2006) - A report reviewing economic and demographic trends, forecasting the future direction of these trends, and identifying the implications of these trends for Fairfax County. The focus of the study is to identify those trends most likely to impact county government services and community needs. Trends are organized around eleven topic areas: rapid population growth and urbanization, transformation from a suburban bedroom community to a major employment center, a population growing older, rapid cultural and ethnic diversification, children and youth, housing trends, patterns of income and wealth, health care issues, rapid technological change, community safety and community engagement.

2004 Virginia Health Care Insurance and Access Survey: Fairfax County Analyses - The report contains tables describing health insurance coverage rates, the characteristics of the uninsured, the availability of private and public coverage, the stability and adequacy of health coverage, and health care utilization.

A Community Sampler: Eight Immigrant and Refugee Communities with Public School Children (2000) - A report and eight brochures profiling immigrant and refugee communities that speak Spanish, Urdu, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese, Kurdish, and Somali. This series of publications contains information on community strengths, financial wellbeing, employment, educational attainment, family structure and living arrangements, ability to speak English, and community attachment.

2000 Fairfax-Falls Church Community Assessment - The 2000 Community Assessment was conducted jointly by Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax, the City of Falls Church, and the Fairfax-Falls Church United Way to gather information about people in the community and to assist in human services planning. The survey provides information about population characteristics, educational attainment, employment, health insurance, mental health, long-term care needs, day care, English proficiency, income, and housing.

Profiles Containing Data from the U.S. Census Bureau - These profiles contain general demographics such as population, households, age, race and ethnicity, housing occupancy and tenure, and households by type; social characteristics such as educational attainment, disability status, language spoken and linguistic isolation, nativity and place of birth, mobility, and living arrangements; employment characteristics such as employment status, class of worker, occupation, and mode of travel to work; and economic characteristics such as household income, poverty, and housing costs.
