What We Do

The Economic, Demographic and Statistical Research (EDSR) unit conducts quantitative research to support the goals and initiatives of Fairfax County. On an annual basis EDSR produces small-area economic and demographic estimates and forecasts for Fairfax County and conducts special studies and research. The data and analyses produced by EDSR are used for program planning, Capital Improvement Program (CIP) planning, policy initiatives, grant writing, budgeting, revenue forecasting, performance measurement, and to help decision-makers to leverage resources and align policies and programs to the county’s changing needs.

Demographic Reports

  Highlighted by the Fairfax NewsCenter, the Demographic Reports 2024 were published as part of an annual effort to provide insights into our local community. In 2024, Fairfax County continues to experience steady growth in both housing and population. We are also enhancing our analysis of economic equity across the county by introducing the Gini Index, a standard measure of income inequality, for the first time, alongside continued reporting of the poverty rate. The report data is utilized for decision-making in various areas. Demographic and Economic Data and Applications for Equity in Fairfax County, VA

EDSR participated in and contributed to Fairfax County’s first-ever equity conference, LEADing for Equity Conference, on June 28, 2024. During the "Data for Equity" session, EDSR presented "Demographic and Economic Data and Applications for Equity in Fairfax County, VA," highlighting the significant data and applications available to support the country’s vision of One Fairfax and to promote equity throughout the county.
