Therapeutic Recreation Services' aim is to provide opportunities for children and adults with disabilities so they may acquire the skills that enable them to participate in the recreation and leisure programs of their choice. Staff is committed to providing services, education, and resources that meet our participants' interests, needs, and abilities on the road toward lifelong participation and enjoyment in recreation and leisure activities. Staff also provides support and advocacy to individuals who wish to participate in general recreation activities

TRACERS allows customers to submit a majority of the registration materials for TRS programs online. All information entered on the forms will be saved and stored under your username and password.

Programs Listing for: Children, Teens, and Young Adult Programs

Adult Social Club-Teen and Young Adult (*not summer camp)

Ages: 14-29


Teen and Young Adult Social Club is for individuals ages 14-29 who have physical, sensory, developmental and/or learning disabilities.  Members of this club require minimal supervision, are independent in their daily living activities and can be successful in a 1:6 staff to participant ratio.  The group goes out 2 times a month and members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter.  Members will have the opportunity to socialize with new friends, learn to plan their own leisure and engage with their community.  They will experience a wide variety of local activities including sporting events, community events, outdoor activities, and much more.  Annual membership is $35.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $60.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership.    Transportation is not provided to the meeting location, but is provided from the meeting location to the activity.  There are two meeting locations; one in Annandale and one in Fairfax

Teen and Young Adult Membership Requirements:
-Members must be able to:
    •  Participate independently in a social or group structure within a community environment
    •  Maintain self-control (i.e. no violent, abusive or aggressive behaviors)
    •  Maintain their own personal care and hygiene requirements (or provide an attendant)
    •  Self-administer and carry their own medication
    •  Applicants may be asked to come in for an interview or provide additional information to determine  


Registration is currently open for the 2024 Annual Membership. Registration is ongoing and will be accepted year-round. You will not be able to sign up for monthly activities until you have completed the Annual Membership Registration.

Friday Night Voyager

For participants ages 13-22


Friday Night Voyager aims to build participants’ leisure independence by focusing on targeted leisure skill development within the group’s specific areas of interest.  The group will talk about their interests at the beginning of the program and vote on the leisure activities they want to pursue as a group for that session.  For each session the groups will focus on effective communication, teamwork, socialization and goal setting skills.   Participants will engage in a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to work towards being more independent in the leisure and recreation activities of their choice.    

Who is a good fit for Friday Night Voyager?
Individuals ages 13-22 with high functioning intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or Autism Spectrum disorder who in a community setting are able to:
• Interact appropriately with peers with minimal behavioral management assistance (redirection, verbal prompts) in a 1:5-1:6 ratio
• Follow multi-step instructions, ask for assistance and convey feelings/needs appropriately
• Take care of personal care needs with minimal support (verbal cues)
• Remain with the group

JPMF Splash Water Safety Lessons

For ages 5-22


JPMF Splash, a water safety and skills program, teaches individuals with disabilities how to be safe and have fun in and around the water. This unique program was created by The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund, and it is based on five water safety rules developed specifically for individuals with disabilities. Under the guidance of a water instructor and therapeutic recreation staff, volunteer swim buddies are paired with participants to assist them with skill building games and exercises. Participants will learn how to enter and exit the water safely, have fun in the water by socializing with peers, and follow water safety rules including Always Swim with a Buddy and Stop, Look and Listen when the Lifeguard Blows the Whistle.

Participation Requirements:
-Be able to interact safely with peers.
-Follow staff directions with moderate prompts.
-Participate appropriately in a 1:3 ratio

Monday Bites

Individuals ages 13-22


TRS is excited to bring our Monday Bites cooking program to you this fall! Monday Bites will take place on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:15 p.m. and will give youth the opportunity to enhance their cooking skills by learning simple ways to provide meals for themselves and others. This 6-week course will encompass kitchen safety, learning how to follow a recipe, tips and tricks when shopping for ingredients, assembling simple, yet healthy meals, and education on healthy eating.

Who is a good fit for Monday Bites?
Individuals ages 13-22 with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or Autism Spectrum disorder who in a community setting are:

Power Soccer (for users of power wheelchairs)

5 and Up


Power Soccer is designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users.  Athletes' disabilities include quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and many others.  Power Soccer involves two teams of four players that attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in a skilled and challenging game.  This is a recreational program with a focus on developing skills, team building, and fun, and opportunities to participate competitively may be available as well.  The program is for those ages 5 and up who are able to drive their own power wheelchair.  Eight week fall and winter sessions meet on Saturdays at Irving Middle School in Springfield, VA, from 10:00am to 12pm.

S.M.I.L.E.

Saturday Morning Integrated Leisure Experience
Ages: 2-5 (Preschool)


The S.M.I.L.E. program is an integrated play program for children with and without disabilities. From the "Good-Morning Song" to the "Good-Bye Song", children can participate in a variety of early learning activities such as arts and crafts, sports, group games, and more! S.M.I.L.E. encourages appropriate social and behavioral interactions in a structured play environment. S.M.I.L.E. operates on Saturday mornings from 10am-1pm during the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Cost per session of S.M.I.L.E. Session 1: $110.00. Scholarships are available.

Saturday Discovery

Ages: 6-22  (must have completed kindergarten)


Saturday Discovery provides individuals the opportunity to discover their leisure interests by exploring various leisure options such as arts, sports, sensory, dance, and music, all adapted to meet their individual needs in a structured environment.  In this newly designed, lower ratio program (1:2/1:3) staff will be able to provide the level of support needed for each participant to be successful. Participants need to bring a packed lunch.

Participation requirements:

Saturday Discovery Participants must:
• Be able to interact safely with peers
• Follow staff directions with moderate prompts
• Be willing to try a variety of activities and
• Participate appropriately in a 1:2-1:3 staff to participant ratio

*Please Note: participants who are currently exhibiting frequent aggressive behaviors that are deemed harmful or injurious to others or who require a 1:1 for extended periods of time may need more support than the Saturday Discovery program is designed to provide.  If you are unsure if your son/daughter will be successful in this program, please call the main TRS offices and an initial eligibility assessment can be conducted.  TRS understands that behaviors change over time therefore reevaluation for program placement is available on a semi-annual basis.*

Paralympic Sports (wheelchair basketball)

Ages: 4-22 (must still be enrolled in high school)


Fairfax Falcons wheelchair basketball program is a dynamic team of athletes that provides children and adolescents ages 4 to 22 with a wide range of lower extremity disability, such as paralysis, amputation, radiological evidence of limb shortening, spina bifida, a spinal cord injury, or cerebral palsy, with a variety of sports experiences, teamwork, social skills, and fitness skills.  While all our athletes compete in wheelchairs, not all athletes use wheelchairs outside of sports.  The program is open to Fairfax County and non-county residents.  The Fairfax Falcons compete in tournaments with players from up and down the East Coast.  No worries if you’re new to wheelchair sports; there are different skill levels to include all players. The Falcons meet year-round on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at varying locations in the county.  All players must be able to push their own wheelchair.

Levels of Play
• Novice - Athletes ages 8 and under, focus on development of chair skills, communication, and ball handling
• Prep - Athletes 13 and under
• Varsity - Athletes 22 and under
