Homebuyer Education

Demonstrating completion of a homebuyer education program is a mandatory pre-requisite to use any Fairfax County homebuyer programs. Most new homebuyers complete the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) Homeownership Class. This six-hour class is taught in several locations throughout Northern Virginia. The VHDA Homeownership Class is free but because seating is limited registration is required. A schedule of VHDA Homeownership Education classes hosted by Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is listed below. To obtain a class schedule and for more information about other classes call VHDA's toll free number (1-888-643-2696). You may also visit the VHDA website for information on their schedules and programs.  The VHDA requires that everyone fill out and bring a Spending Plan to class.

To register: call 703-246-5087 between 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please note: You must attend both 3-hour weekday class sessions or the 6-hour weekend session to obtain full credit and be issued a certificate.

The Center for Housing Counseling Training

The Center for Housing Counseling Training provides VHDA homeownership education classes on Saturday. All classes are taught at the Center's office located in Alexandria, Virginia.

Mortgage Bankers Association of Metropolitan Washington

The Metropolitan Bankers Association of Metropolitan Washington sponsors the VHDA Homeownership Education Class on a monthly basis. All classes are taught at the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors in Fairfax, Virginia. Classes held at:

VHDA Classes in Korean

The Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington will hold the First-time Homebuyer Orientation and the VHDA class together in Korean. Credit Smart Classes

The Northern Virginia Urban League offers the six week Credit Smart classes in Alexandria.  Classes will be held at the South County Government Center, 8350 Richmond Highway, 2nd floor conference center, Alexandria, VA 22309.  For more information and to reserve a seat, please call Geoffrey Tate at 202-320-0571 or email Geoff at g.tate@nvul.org.   In order to get a certificate, attendees must complete the entire series.  This is a financial literacy partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Human Services and the Homeownership and Relocation Services Division of the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development.
