On Friday, Nov. 6, from 6 – 9 p.m., the Fairfax County Department of Family Services will host a celebration “Under the Big Top,” in honor of adoptive families as part of National Adoption Awareness Month at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035). The circus theme will provide lots of fun for the entire family – clowns, face-painting, circus foods and prizes will be part of the celebration, as well as a special appearance by clowns from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Circus. The public is invited to join Fairfax County adoptive families in the celebration.
The celebration will recognize adoptive families in Fairfax County. It will also highlight the musical and artistic talents of adopted children. Children who have talent and an interest in showcasing their talents at the event, are asked to contact Stephanie Pegues with the Department of Family Services at 703-324-7792; TTY 703-222-9452, by Monday, October 26.
National Adoption Awareness Month began in 1976 when former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis proclaimed Adoption Week in an effort to promote awareness of the need for adoptive families for children in foster care. The effort went national shortly after that when former President Gerald Ford made the first National Adoption Week proclamation. In 1990, the week was expanded to a month. Locally, the Fairfax County Department of Family Services is committed to helping children in the foster care system find permanent homes.
Fairfax County is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in all county programs services and activities. Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request. To request this information in an alternate format, call 703-324-5870; TTY 703-222-9452.
