Free Minor Home Safety Improvements Offered by
Fairfax County’s Independent Living Project
Free minor home safety improvements are available to participants of Fairfax County’s Independent Living Project. The home improvements are funded by the Virginia Department of Health and are available for a limited time.
The Independent Living Project is a free, upbeat program of exercise and workshops offered to county adults wishing to stay in their homes as they grow older. The program includes a 6-week exercise program and workshops on fall prevention, nutrition, food safety, medication management, getting the most out of your next medical appointment and brain fitness. The exercise sessions improve balance and strength to help avoid falls.
Participants are encouraged to schedule a home safety review. Limited funding is available for suggested home safety improvements.
The Independent Living Project will begin new programs on:
May 28 to July 9 at 10:45 a.m.-12:55 p.m.

The project is part of the Department of Family Services’ Fairfax Area Agency on Aging. Heatherwood Retirement Community of Burke is a sponsor of the program at Commons Community Center.
