General Comments

  • The need for signage and wayfinding should be incorporated into the goals discussion.
  • The lack of wayfinding and signage is a major barrier that should be included in the list of barriers.
  • Support facilities such as bike parking and commuter showers are a critical element of making Tysons more bikeable.
  • Political challenges and the degree of coordination required in making Tysons more bikeable were noted and discussed.
  • The “piecemeal” nature of future development will make the development of a connected network of facilities a challenge.
  • There is a need to proactively engage residents and other stakeholders to ensure that everyone understands the broader purpose and goals of this effort. Showing images of what is being proposed and discussing how it has worked successfully in other places will play a big part in winning “hearts and minds.”
  • There is a need to analyze and address maintenance issues with paint (e.g. sharrows, bike lanes, etc.) on the road.
  • There is a need to explain how the proposed improvements will be good for everyone, not just the bicyclists (e.g. quality of life, safety, etc.
  • One opportunity in Tysons is that everyone is already expecting a great deal of change (physical, aesthetics, transportation network, etc.) in the area.
  • It will be important to improve connections to outlining areas, while not making it seem like Tysons is pushing out into the surrounding neighborhoods.
  • It will be important to line up support for the recommendations to counter potential resistance.
  • It will be important to think strategically about the first striping projects that are implemented to ensure that the projects do not people skeptical about the broader purpose of the effort.
  • There is a real need to analyze and provide recommendations for signal detection. New technologies should be research and specific recommendations for improvements should be provided.
  • Education about bike programs and the need for bike facilities is important. Attempts should be made to coordinate localized education with bicycle facilities improvements (e.g. educational “door hangings” on homes where bicycle lane markings will occur)
  • It will be important to efficiently use existing roadways now to improve bicycle travel
  • Intersection design will be critical for safety, especially for off-road paths
