Fairfax Connector Returns to Full Service, Launches New and Enhanced Bus Routes on August 29

August 17, 2020 

Fairfax  Connector, the largest local bus system in the Commonwealth of Virginia, will resume full service on all routes starting Saturday, August 29, 2020, with service enhancements including a new commuter route from the Stringfellow Road Park and Ride lot to Southwest Washington, D.C., launching simultaneously.

Huntington Metrorail Station South Entrance Closed Due to Construction Beginning August 19

August 6, 2020 

Beginning August,19, 2020, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will begin work to reconstruct and replace the escalator banks and escalators at the south entrance of the Huntington Metrorail Station. The construction is being expedited to impact the least number of customers while the Metrorail ridership is low due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation.  Construction activities are scheduled to last until mid-January 2021.

Fairfax Connector Resumes Service to Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride Bus Loop Monday, July 13, 2020

July 10, 2020 

Fairfax Connector will resume service to the bus loop at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride as construction has been completed. Customers may board buses in the bus loop beginning on Monday, July 13, 2020.

Other construction activity continues at the Park and Ride to prepare for Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service, including the Kiss and Ride lot, which will be closed until Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service begins next year.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) invites you to provide feedback on the proposed update of its Title VI program. Title VI policies ensure equitable distribution of transit service changes and as part of the update process the public is encouraged to give input on:

  • Proposed Major Service Changes – Service changes that are significant enough to require special analysis that ensure the proposed changes will not have discriminatory effects on minority or low-income areas
  • Disparate Impacts – Service changes that have discriminatory effects on minority areas
  • Disproportionate Burdens – Service changes that have discriminatory effects on low income areas.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is seeking community input on a proposed plan for bus service in the Herndon-Reston area.

After two rounds of community engagement, stakeholder input and technical analysis, FCDOT has developed a proposed plan for improved Fairfax Connector bus service in the Herndon and Reston areas, including connections to the future Metrorail Silver Line Phase 2 stations. The proposed plan aims to improve on-time performance and streamline service to meet the needs of the community and commuters.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is seeking public input on Fairfax Connector proposed service changes for Fall 2020 that aim to enhance customer service. FCDOT normally conducts several community input meetings on proposed changes to Fairfax Connector service, but because of Governor Northam’s current public gathering restrictions due to COVID-19, transit staff recorded the presentation and made it available here for viewing. The public is encouraged to give feedback on the proposed changes via an online survey, email, mail and by phone.

Fairfax Connector Passengers Required to Wear Face Coverings Starting May 18

May 14, 2020

Passengers on Fairfax Connector buses will be required to wear face coverings, a measure the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will make effective starting Monday, May 18, 2020, with a weeklong grace period through Monday, May 25, 2020. County officials previously encouraged riders to wear face coverings, but that will now become mandatory. This enhanced safety measure aims to help Fairfax Connector passengers protect each other and bus operators during the ongoing COVID-19 situation and follows guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Fairfax County Expands Bus Service and Alerts Travelers of Detours Due to Cedar Lane Bridge Closure Beginning Mid-May 2020

Fairfax County Department of Transportation announces the expansion of service on Fairfax Connector bus routes 462 and 467, effective Saturday, May 9, 2020, to assist travelers during the demolition and reconstruction of the Cedar Lane Bridge over I-66. The Cedar Lane Bridge reconstruction effort is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Transform 66-Outside the Beltway project and is expected to begin mid-May, 2020, and last through November 2020.

Fairfax Connector Service Relocated as Construction at Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride Begins May 4

April 22, 2020

Beginning May 4,  Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to temporary stops on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop. Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County thanks customers for their patience during construction.

Fairfax Connector Passengers Urged to Wear Face Coverings on Buses

April 15, 2020

To protect the health and safety of Fairfax Connector passengers and operators, Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) officials are urging passengers to use non-medical face coverings or cloth masks in efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. While the use of cloth face coverings is strongly encouraged, no one without such a face covering will be denied entry to Fairfax Connector buses.

Fairfax Connector Announces Service Reductions due to Impacts of COVID-19

Effective Saturday, April 11, 2020, Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will make temporary adjustments to Fairfax Connector bus service due to reduced ridership from the impacts of COVID-19 and to protect the health and safety of Fairfax Connector passengers and operators.  Fairfax County is committed to continue to provide transit service to residents who have no alternate way to travel during this situation. FCDOT officials would like to thank all Fairfax Connector customers for their patience and flexibility during this difficult time.

Fairfax Connector Temporarily Suspends Fare Collection, Requires Rear Door Boarding Beginning March 24, 2020

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) announces that beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2020, Fairfax Connector customers will be required to enter and exit the bus using the rear doors. This does not apply to customer­­s who need to use a wheelchair ramp. Fare collection on buses will also be temporarily suspended due to the location of fareboxes and SmarTrip equipment at the front entrance of buses.

Online Survey: Public Input Sought on Preferred Plan for Herndon-Reston Area Bus Service

**The community meetings previously scheduled for March 21, March 25 and April 1, 2020, have been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. Metrorail Orange Line Stations in Fairfax County Closed Beginning May 23

March 13, 2020

Beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing three Metrorail Orange Line stations for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, Vienna, Dunn Loring and East Falls Church Metrorail stations will be closed from Saturday, May 23, 2020, through Monday, Sept. 7, 2020, to allow for around-the-clock work. The station closures are part of WMATA's three-year Platform Improvement Project that will completely reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations, making them safer and more accessible for customers with disabilities, while also addressing safety concerns and longstanding structural issues.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold a third round of community meetings and engagement opportunities to encourage public input on the preferred plan to provide enhanced Fairfax Connector bus service in the Reston and Herndon areas, including connections to the future Metrorail Silver Line Phase 2 stations in Herndon and Reston. The preferred service plan was based on public input received through community engagement in 2019, stakeholder engagement and technical analysis. After this final round of community input meetings, FCDOT will finalize the preferred plan based on public feedback and technical analysis and take to the Board of Supervisors for approval.

The route will feature ten (10) morning trips to downtown D.C. and ten (10) afternoon trips to the Stringfellow Park & Ride.  The proposed changes also include adding two (2) morning trips and two (2) afternoon trips on Route 699 and to adjust departure times on most trips to better align with rider demand.

As a result of the job action, Transdev does not expect all drivers represented by ATU Local 1764 to report for work on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, and bus service will be operated by a limited number of available personnel.

The Fairfax Connector operations contractor, Transdev, is currently negotiating a new labor agreement with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1764, which represents Fairfax Connector drivers and mechanics. Even though Fairfax County is not a party to any labor negotiations between Transdev and labor unions, Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has encouraged negotiations in good faith with the goal of completing a new contract prior to the expiration of the current one on November 30, 2019.

Due to construction on I-66 as part of Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 will be closed from on or around October 18, 2019, and will remain closed until summer 2020. This closure will allow for bridge reconstruction and addition of an express lanes ramps to and from the west. Beginning September 23 through December 2019, Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to a temporary stop on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop.

Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County thanks our customers for their patience during construction.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has awarded a 5-year contract, plus 10 optional years, to Transdev North America for the operations of Fairfax Connector fixed-route bus service, effective July 1, 2019. The base contract cost (start-up and fiscal years one through five) is approximately $443 million. Transdev will immediately begin activities to transition operations from the current contractor, working closely with Fairfax Connector staff to ensure a seamless transition.

Metro to Close South Parking Garage at Huntington Station, Effective August 10, 2018

ALERT: Effective today, Metro announced the south parking garage at the Huntington Station on the Yellow line will be closed indefinitely in preparation for demolition. Additional parking is available for customers in the middle and north garages that can easily accommodate the approximately 300 spaces that will be affected.
