A New Community-Powered Way to Care for Fairfax County’s Trails & Sidewalks

Help keep Fairfax County’s trails and sidewalks clean, safe, and welcoming.
The Trail Ranger Program is a volunteer initiative that empowers residents to support walking, biking, and rolling throughout the county by caring for the paths we use every day.

Trails and sidewalks are essential for getting around, but they aren’t regularly swept or monitored. Many issues go unreported, leading to debris, hazards, and neglected areas. Trail Rangers help fill that gap — and make a visible difference in their community.

What Do Trail Rangers Do?

Trail Rangers support Fairfax County’s active transportation network while going about their normal walks and rides.

Rangers:

🧹 Remove debris and trash
🛠 Address minor issues when possible
📍 Report larger maintenance or safety concerns
🚶‍♀️🚴 Promote safe, everyday trail use
🤝 Help build a stronger trail community

Every Ranger helps make daily trips safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Program Goals

Trail Service

Monthly clean-up days along trails and sidewalks
Program runs April–November

Trail Maintenance

Remove litter, glass, vegetation, and obstacles
Identify and report larger issues to responsible agencies

Community Building

Welcoming events that connect neighbors and promote trail care.
