Bus Loop Construction at Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride Begins Sept. 23

Beginning September 23 through November 2019, Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to a temporary stop on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop.

Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon-Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County thanks our customers for their patience during construction.

Fairfax County will hold a third Public Information Meeting on the Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the gymnasium at Bryant High School located at 2709 Popkins Lane in Alexandria.

The meeting will feature an open house from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., with a presentation at 7 p.m. Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) staff and project consultants will provide updates on the BRT project, discuss next steps, answer questions and take public comments from the community related to the planning and design of the BRT system.

Beginning August 19, 2019, for approximately three weeks, parking availability at the Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail station will be reduced by up to a total of 40 spaces on parking levels G4, G5 and G6 due to maintenance. Patrons are reminded to park in designated areas only.

Currently the garage is at capacity and officials encourage commuters to consider other transportation options including Fairfax Connector bus service, biking, walking, ridesharing and utilization of the kiss and ride. Thank you for your patience as repairs are made to the garage.

Fairfax County and Dominion Energy are partnering on an autonomous electric shuttle pilot tentatively planned for the Merrifield area in Fairfax County. Today, the demonstration project moved a step closer to implementation with the award of a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT) for the execution of the pilot. The Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board approved the $250,000 grant for Fairfax County, making this pilot the first state-funded autonomous public transportation demonstration project in Virginia.

Fairfax County commuters and travelers are reminded that beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing six (6) Metrorail Blue and Yellow line stations south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and Franconia-Springfield stations will be closed from Memorial Day, May 25, 2019, through Sept. 8, 2019, to allow for around-the-clock work.

Fairfax County commuters and travelers are urged to plan now and know the various travel options available to them to avoid adding to the gridlock by driving alone. Impacted Fairfax County commuters who are considering trying alternate transit and ridesharing options instead of driving alone can take a quick survey to see if they qualify for a $50 commuter incentive.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing Tuesday, March 26 on plans to improve about three miles of Richmond Highway (Route 1) from Jeff Todd Way to Sherwood Hall Lane in Fairfax County.

The recommended design will widen the road from four to six lanes, provide bike paths and sidewalks on both sides of the road, and reserve the median width necessary to accommodate Fairfax County's future Bus Rapid Transit plans for dedicated bus-only lanes.

Herndon-Monroe Garage Re-striping Work

Portions of the Herndon-Monroe Garage will be closed beginning October 1. Pavement re-striping will be occurring in multiple locations and drive lanes and parking spaces will be re-striped in a new configuration. Accessible parking spaces will be relocated to new areas on the first floor.

To ensure the safety of commuters who are ridesharing, including carpooling and slugging, pick up and drop-off areas have been relocated.

Fairfax County is celebrating Try Transit Week Sept. 17-21, 2018, and Car Free Days Sept. 21 and 22, 2018, by encouraging residents to go car free for a day and try an alternative to drive-alone commuting. This year, there are two promotions to encourage commuters to try an alternative way to work:

  • Pledge to take transit during Try Transit Week for a chance to win a year of free transit service from a participating Virginia transit operator as well as a pair of round-trip tickets aboard Amtrak’s Northeast Regional train! There are local prizes, too.

Capital Bikeshare e-bike Pilot Launches in Fairfax County Sept. 5

On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2018, Fairfax County launches a pilot project that adds black e-bikes to the bright red-colored Capital Bikeshare fleet in Reston and Tysons. The pilot is scheduled to run through November 2018. The e-bikes, known as Capital Bikeshare Plus, are battery operated pedal-assist bicycles that provide users with a small boost, making pedaling uphill or longer distances effortless. There will be approximately 80 e-bikes deployed across the National Capital Region as part of the pilot.

Fairfax Connector Supplemental Express Service to the Pentagon Ends as Metrorail Track Work is Completed

Fairfax Connector Route 599 supplemental express bus service to the Pentagon from the Vienna Metro Station and the Reston South Park and Ride ends this week as track work on Metrorail's Orange, Silver and Blue lines (August 11 - 26) comes to an end this weekend. The supplemental service was added to give Fairfax County commuters additional travel options during the Metrorail disruption.

Metro to Close South Parking Garage at Huntington Station, Effective August 10, 2018

ALERT: Effective today, Metro announced the south parking garage at the Huntington Station on the Yellow line will be closed indefinitely in preparation for demolition. Additional parking is available for customers in the middle and north garages that can easily accommodate the approximately 300 spaces that will be affected. Beginning Aug. 11, 2018, through Aug. 26, 2018, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will conduct around the clock construction on a segment of the Metrorail Orange, Blue and Silver lines resulting in limited capacity, and possible crowding and delays.

To avoid gridlock, Fairfax County commuters are urged to consider the use of alternative travel options such as express bus connections, carpooling, slugging and biking. Employers are also strongly encouraged to allow telework and flexible schedules, whenever possible.

FCDOT will gather feedback on the Architectural Survey completed on the southern area of the Soapstone Connector project, including 10 parcels on Association Drive south of the Dulles Toll Road. The survey was conducted at the request of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to record the buildings in the office park and to make a preliminary recommendation regarding the eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
