Transportation Advisory Commission Presents 2010 Transportation Achievement Award
October 18, 2011
The Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission (TAC) presented its 2010 Transportation Achievement Award today during the Board of Supervisors meeting. The award was presented to Karyn L. Moreland, Chief, Capital Projects Section, Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT).
The award recognizes Mrs. Moreland’s extensive service to the residents of Fairfax County. Karyn’s planning of transportation facilities to minimize community disruption and adverse environmental impacts enhances the quality of life of Fairfax County residents and others who travel on Fairfax County roads.
Karyn currently serves as the Chief of the Capital Projects Section in the Department of Transportation, managing a staff that coordinates over 200 projects including those managed by the Virginia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. She has led a team of professionals in successfully delivering elements of both of the Board's Four-Year Transportation Programs, which included developing individual projects as well as publishing a quarterly status tracking report.
Karyn began working for Fairfax County in 1989 in the Office of Road Program Management, Department of Public Works. She then took a position with Site Review, where for six years she reviewed developer plans, mainly in the Sully District.
For the past 12 years, Karyn has worked in the Department of Transportation. She has played a key role in many major, complex projects, including the Beltway and I-95/I-395 HOT Lanes, the Burke Centre Virginia Railway Express garage, the Springfield Interchange, portions of the Fairfax County Parkway, the Dulles Toll Road Express Bus Slip Ramps, and the Metro garage expansions at Franconia-Springfield, West Falls Church, and Huntington.
Karyn is an outstanding Fairfax County resource on more than just transportation issues, and she is considered a “Go-To” person in the Department of Transportation. With over 21 years of service to Fairfax County, Karyn serves as a model to others in handling the day-to-day workload efficiently. Her commitment to transportation is demonstrated daily to the Board, to citizens, and to her fellow employees. Karyn is always willing to help, and always ready with a friendly smile, positive attitude and professionalism.
The Transportation Advisory Commission provides advice, information and recommendations to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on major county transportation issues, planning and programming.
