Public Health Outreach for MRC Volunteers

Description: This interactive webinar introduces health communication principles and demonstrates public health outreach strategies that volunteers can readily apply in their community. Participants will learn how to describe the values of public health outreach to a community; describe the importance of disease prevention programs as they relate to preparedness; be an effective volunteer at public health outreach events, such as community health fairs; demonstrate effective communication skills during a public health or other emergency.

Be a Home Hero: Emergency Information Bag Packing with OEM
When: Saturday, July 25 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Where: McConnell Public Safety Transportation Operations Center, Fairfax, Va
Membership Requirements: Active, Pending Volunteers (Friends & Family age 16 and up, with registration)
Description: The Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will be hosting an emergency information bag packing session to prepare for outreach during September's National Preparedness Month. You'll also get a sneak peek at the county's Emergency Operation Center and learn about emergency preparedness. Light breakfast snacks will be served. Volunteers must register individually.

Epi Update Training
When: Wednesday, August 12, 7 p.m.
Where: Fairfax County Health Department, 10777 Main St, Fairfax VA
Membership Requirements: Active Members Only
Description: This course will provide an overview of several recent events where the epidemiology team has been involved.  This course will touch on events such as the World Police and Fire Games, Ebola, Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and measles. Instructor: Denise Sockwell, MSPH, CP-FS

Basic Training

All Fairfax MRC members must complete an application and the Basic Training Requirements to be considered an Active Level volunteer and participate in any MRC-related activity.

Basic Training Requirements include the following classes:

  • MRC 101: Orientation
  • FEMA IS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction; offered online.
  • FEMA IS-100: Introduction to Incident Command System; offered online.
