Be a Home HERO – Emergency Information Neighborhood Program with OEM
When: Saturday, May 16, 2015, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Oakton High School, Vienna
Membership Requirements: Pending/Active Members (please feel free to bring a friend, with pre-registration!)
Description: Volunteers are invited to participate in this new outreach program which delivers emergency preparedness information and supplies to neighborhoods across Fairfax County. A T-shirt, light breakfast and lunch will be provided!

Northern Virginia National Council of Negro Women Health Fair
When:
Saturday, May 16, 2015, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: James Lee Community Center, Falls Church, Va.
Membership Requirements: Active Members (Basic Training Complete)
Description: Help promote the MRC, emergency preparedness and the Health Department with the Fairfax County Health Department Outreach Team.

Potomac Mills Costco POD Drill
When: Thursday, June 4, 2015, 7 – 8 a.m.
Where: Potomac Mills Costco, Woodbridge, Va.
Membership Requirements: Pending/Active Volunteers (friends and family are welcome with registration)
Description: Volunteer to be an Actor in the emergency preparedness exercise. Volunteers will act as community members requesting medication during a public health emergency. This pilot initiative through a partnership between the CDC, VDH and the Costco Wholesale Corporation will help test emergency dispensing processes and demonstrate the capability of a Costco wholesale store to rapidly dispense a large quantity of medication during a public health emergency. A free hot breakfast will be provided to eat onsite or to take with you.

VDH: Public Health Outreach Education for MRC Volunteers
When: Thursday, June 11, 2015, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Where: Webinar
Membership Requirements: Active Volunteers (completed Orientation, IS 100, IS 700)
Description: This interactive webinar introduces health communication principles and demonstrates public health outreach strategies that volunteers can readily apply in their community. Participants will learn how to describe the values of public health outreach to a community; describe the importance of disease prevention programs as they relate to preparedness; be an effective volunteer at public health outreach events, such as community health fairs; demonstrate effective communication skills during a public health or other emergency.

Basic Training

All Fairfax MRC members must complete an application and the Basic Training Requirements to be considered an Active Level volunteer and participate in any MRC-related activity.

Basic Training Requirements include the following classes:

  • MRC 101: Orientation
  • FEMA IS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction; offered online.
  • FEMA IS-100: Introduction to Incident Command System; offered online.
