Office of Emergency Management Emergency Preparedness Information Distribution
When: Saturday, March 21, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Where: Burke, Va.
Membership Requirements: Active and Pending Volunteers (and friends) are welcome to participate
Description: RSVP-Northern Virginia is teaming up with the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management to distribute emergency preparedness information in Burke, VA. Volunteers will be teaching residents in Fairfax County how to prepare for emergencies.
Registration: Register online. More information will be provided after registering.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

George Mason Health and Fitness Expo Outreach
When: March 26, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: George Mason University
Membership Requirements: Active Members (Basic Training Complete)
Description: Promote Fairfax MRC and recruit new members at the George Mason Health and Fitness Expo! MRC will share a table with Fairfax County Health Department staff. Staff will bring MRC materials to and from the event. Assist for part or all of the event!

Warehouse Exercise
When: Monday – Wednesday, April 6 – 8, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Springfield, Va.
Membership Requirements: Active Members (Basic Training Complete)
Description: The Office of Emergency Preparedness will exercise the capacity to sort, inventory, and manage materials delivered to the warehouse and seeks MRC support. Volunteers will assist in sorting materials, scanning materials into the inventory management system and repackaging materials for placement in the warehouse. The work will be physical, with a lot of standing, bending and some lifting.  Appropriate clothing for the warehouse is required, including clothing that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. Preference is requested for volunteers who can assist all three days, however, all support is appreciated! A one-hour lunch break will be provided. The Warehouse has a break-room with a refrigerator and microwave. There are some restaurants nearby.

Basic Life Support Certification
When: Saturday, April 11, 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Where: Inova Fairfax
Membership Requirements: Active Members (Basic Training Complete), Healthcare Providers (healthcare providers who cannot receive this certification through a workplace will receive priority in this training.)

Layperson Adult CPR/AED Certification
When: Wednesday, April 15, 6 – 9 p.m.
Where: Fairfax County Health Department

Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Counterterrorism Workshop
When: Saturday, April 18, 2015, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Where: Marine Corps Base Quantico, Quantico, Va.
Membership Requirement: Active Members (Basic Training Complete)
Description: The World Police and Fire Games Training Committee, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Base Quantico, will be hosting a DHS Office for Bombing Protection IED Counterterrorism Workshop. This Workshop enhances the participant's understanding of the IED threat, surveillance detection methods and soft target awareness. The workshop covers awareness and prevention measures as well as collaborative information-sharing resources to enable facility owners and operators to deter, prevent, detect, and protect against the illicit use of explosives in the United States.

MWAA Dulles Airport Mass Casualty Exercise
When: Saturday, May 2. Rolling start times 5 – 7:30 a.m. The exercise will conclude at 1 p.m.
Where: Dulles Airport
Description: Volunteers are requested to serve as actors in a large-scale exercise conducted by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) . Actors will be assigned an injury (from minor to severe) based upon the scenario and will receive corresponding moulage to simulate the injury.
Membership Requirement: Active Members (Basic Training Complete)

Lunch and an exercise t-shirt will be provided.

Basic Training

All Fairfax MRC members must complete an application and the Basic Training Requirements to be considered an Active Level volunteer and participate in any MRC-related activity.

Basic Training Requirements include the following classes:

  • MRC 101: Orientation
  • FEMA IS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction; offered online.
  • FEMA IS-100: Introduction to Incident Command System; offered online.
