Fairfax MRC Volunteers Support Afghan Refugees

"In August I worked at Dulles airport supporting COVID-19 testing of evacuees from Afghanistan. Not only was it a unique location, it was awesome welcoming them home."In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, with their plates already full, Fairfax MRC volunteers stepped in to help with another critical effort. In mid-August 2021, Afghan refugees began arriving at Dulles International Airport. Texts and emails were sent to Fairfax MRC volunteers requesting interpreters and support for COVID-19 testing. Within hours volunteers were at Dulles, working 8- or 12-hour overnight shifts, setting up a testing site and bridging the communication gap between refugees and the people assisting them.

"In August I worked at Dulles airport supporting COVID-19 testing of evacuees from Afghanistan. Not only was it a unique location, it was awesome welcoming them home," -Dave Correll, Fairfax MRC volunteer.

In total, 46 volunteers deployed to Washington Dulles International Airport. While the effort alone was significant, the willingness of volunteers to step in, despite already being involved in the COVID response, perfectly reflects the type of people they are. Fairfax MRC volunteers are devoted to improving the lives of everyone in the community.

April is Volunteer Month! The Health Department is spotlighting the work of the Medical Reserve Corps. Since its creation as  response to the 2001 anthrax attacks, the Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) has been providing support during public health events. From unexpected emergencies like H1N1, measles, COVID-19, tornadoes, and floods, to training events like emergency preparedness exercises and community outreach, MRC volunteers are on the frontlines of public health.
