Alcohol & Drug Services - Service Descriptions


ADS Community Services

  • Assessment and Referral Center provides assessment, evaluation and intake services for adults entering Alcohol and Drug Services. Specialized services are offered to those whose primary language is Spanish and those who have both an alcohol or drug and a mental health diagnoses.
  • Valued Interns, Volunteers and Advocates (VIVA) Program offers individuals and students in the community a variety of opportunities to participate in counseling and other services provided by the Community Services Board.

ADS Adult Services

  • Adult Outpatient Services are provided at four sites throughout the county, and consist of individual and group counseling services for adult alcohol and drug abusers and their families. Intensive day treatment is available at two sites; one for men and one for women. Outpatient counseling and case management services are offered at the outpatient sites for persons who speak Spanish, are diagnosed wiith both mental health and substance abuse problems, or who have HIV/AIDS.
  • Specialized accommodations or referrals are offered to persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and those with mental health or intellectual disability concerns.
  • Family Services are offered to those who have family members or friends whose lives have been affected by people who abuse alcohol or drugs.
  • Recovery Women's Center provides a safe, supportive environment designed to address the specific needs of women who have substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The spectrum of services include outpatient (available in English and Spanish), intensive outpatient, day treatment, continuing care, family and individual sessions. Childcare is offered to participating women with young children. Parenting education is provided to all parents.
  • Men's Day Treatment provides a recovery program for adult men who have substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The program offers a comprehensive continuum of substance abuse services that include outpatient (available in English and Spanish), day treatment, continuing care, family and individual sessions. 
  • Adult Detention Center Services offer assessment, education, counseling, treatment and case management services to inmates of the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
  • Community Correction Services provide specialized substance abuse education and a twelve-week day treatment program to offenders housed in the Pre-Release Center of the Adult Detention Center. 

ADS Residential Services for Adults

  • Fairfax Detoxification Program provides medical and social detoxification services for adults, as well as buphrenorphine detoxification.
  • Homeless Shelter Program offers education, intake, assessment and referral services to residents of the county shelters.
  • A New Beginning is an eight- to twelve-week residential treatment program.
  • Crossroads is a nine- to eighteen-month therapeutic community.
  • Cornerstones offers up to six months of residential treatment for persons who are dually diagnosed with a substance use disorder and mental illness.
  • New Generations is a six- to twelve-month program for adult pregnant and post-partum women and their children.
  • Steps to Recovery is a three-to-twelve-month intensively supervised transitional living program.

ADS Youth Services

  • Outpatient Services are provided at four sites throughout the county and include initial assessments and referrals for adolsescents entering all ADS Youth Services. Individual, group, and family counseling services are available for adolescent alcohol and drug abusers and their families. Special accommodations and referrals are available for Spanish-speaking youth and families.
  • Intensive Day Treatment is available at three outpatient sites. Intensive Day Treatment includes five-day-per-week combined with school/treatment programs for adolescents requiring more intensive services.
  • Residential treatment consists of Crossroads Youth, a residential treatment program for adolescent boys, ages 15-18. The average length of stay is dependent on individual and family progress and is usually 4-12 months. Crossroads Youth offers group, individual and family counseling. There is an on-site school staffed with Fairfax County teachers. Crossroads Youth clients and staff spend time in the community participating in recreational activities and attending recovery support meetings and events. Crossroads staff can access a variety of resources to assist the youth and family in their recovery.
  • Specialized Youth Programs consist of the Substance Abuse Awareness Seminar, an intensive three-day education program for Fairfax County Public School students suspended from school for alcohol or other drug-related offenses. Student Assistance Services are provided in Fairfax County public and other schools. Early Intervention Services consist of education and referral services for youth, families, and community groups. Assessment, education, and treatment services are provided to youth in the Juvenile Court and Mental Health residential programs.
