West Nile Virus (WNV)
West Nile virus was first detected in Fairfax County in 2000 when a single crow was found to be infected. In 2001, more birds were found infected and in 2002 the virus was found infecting birds, horses, mosquitoes and humans. Since 2002 WNV has been found in humans, mosquito and birds.
Fairfax County's West Nile Virus program includes:
- Surveillance of mosquitoes, birds, and human cases.
- Source reduction - elimination of standing water.
- Larviciding
- Public Education
- Community Outreach
