S.M.I.L.E.

Saturday/Sunday Morning Integrated Leisure Experience
Ages: 3-5 (Preschool)

The S.M.I.L.E. program is an integrated play program for children with and without disabilities. Children look forward to arts and crafts, sports, fitness, and more. S.M.I.L.E. encourages appropriate social and behavioral interactions in a play environment. S.M.I.L.E. operates on Saturday and Sunday mornings during the fall, winter, and spring. Summer Explorer Program              

Ages: 5-22 (must have completed kindergarten)

Explore the Summer!

The Summer Explorer Program offers adapted activities such as, arts and crafts, sensory activities and sports in a structured and safe environment.  With a staff to participant ratio of 1:4, the Summer Explorer program is recommended for school aged individuals with a primary physical disability such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy.  Individuals eligible for this program typically utilize adapted devices such as wheelchairs, braces or walkers and require a moderate to extensive level of support with activities of daily living.

 Transportation to and from camp is available from a stop close to the participants home.  The camp cost is $80 per week.  A sliding fee scale and scholarships are available.  The six week Summer Explorer program runs from June 30, 2014 through August 7, 2014 (no program on July 4, 2014), Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Early drop off hours begin at 8:30 a.m.

 Summer Adventure Program            

Ages: 5-12 (must have completed kindergarten)

Summer Camp is an Adventure!

This high-energy program is full of sports, fitness, games, social activities, community outings and structured free-choice activities. With a staff to participant ratio of 1:4, the summer Adventure program is recommended for elementary aged individuals with a specific learning disability such as attention deficit disorder and/or and emotional disability. Individuals eligible for this program are typically more independent in their activities of daily living.

Round trip transportation is provided from a neighborhood stop to the assigned program location. The camp cost is $80 per week. A sliding fee scale and scholarships are available. The six-week Summer Adventure Program runs from June 30, 2014 through August 7, 2014 (no program on July 4th, 2014), Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Early drop off hours begin at 8:30 a.m.

Motor Skills Program

Ages: 5-12 (Grades 1 - 6)

This is the perfect opportunity for a children with a disability to learn a new sport, increase endurance, work on flexibility, and have a great time. The Motor Skills Program operates on Sunday mornings at the Reston YMCA. Each week participants engage in activities which focus on gross motor skill development and fitness. Saturday Leisure Program

Ages: 6-22 (must have completed kindergarten)

The weekend is for fun and recreation, and the Saturday Leisure Program offers a great getaway for individuals with developmental disabilities. Get in shape with the fitness program, learn a new sport, give painting a try, and meet new friends. Join us from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays – the best day of the week! Packed full of special events, arts activities, exciting games, sports, swim trips and sensory activities, the Summer Leisure Program is recommended for school aged individuals with a primary cognitive disability such as an intellectual disability, autism, PDD or Down Syndrome .  Individuals eligible for this program typically require a mild to moderate level of support and would benefit from a 1 to 4 staff to participant ratio. 

Round trip transportation is provided from a neighborhood stop to the assigned program location.  The camp cost is $80 per week.  A sliding fee scale and scholarships are available.  The six-week Summer Leisure Program runs from June 30, 2014 through August 7, 2014 (no program on July 4, 2014), Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Early drop off hours begin at 8:30 a.m.

Wheelchair Sports and Fitness

Ages: 6-22 (must still be enrolled in high school)

Join the Fairfax Falcons for wheelchair sports and fitness. The County’s dynamic team of athletes use wheelchairs to compete in a variety of sports. As a member of BlazeSports America™, the Fairfax Falcons compete in tournaments with players from up and down the East Coast. No worries if you’re new to wheelchair sports; there are different skill levels to include all players. Wheelchair Sport and Fitness meets year-round on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church. The program is open to children with spina bifida, spinal chord injuries, cerebral palsy or an injury affecting their lower extremities. Wheelchair sports offers skill development in many sports including track and field, tennis, basketball and golf. Sports and Fitness is designed for individuals aged 6 to 18 and those 18 to 22 who have not graduated high school. While all our athletes compete in wheelchairs, not all athletes use wheelchairs outside of sports. The program is open to Fairfax County and non-county residents. Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund
“Splash!" Program

Ages: 5-22

The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund “Splash!" Program is a volunteer-based water skills and safety program for people with disabilities. The program operates through the Saturday Leisure program and the Summer Leisure camps. In its first six years, the Joey Pizzano “Splash!" Program reached more than 1,600 people with disabilities throughout Fairfax County. Beepball Program

Ages: 8+

Beepball is the adaptive version for the blind and visually impaired of America’s favorite pastime. This innovative baseball program for people with visual impairments is sponsored by the Telephone Pioneers of America.
