NCS offers a variety of internship positions at locations throughout Fairfax County. Explore current opportunities by clicking to expand any name to find out more information such as application instructions.

Current Available Positions

Internships required by a credit-bearing course of academic study with an educational institution require an agreement between the County and the educational institution.  These agreements can often take time to develop and get approved. The following Universities have an agreement in place:

The Inclusive Support Services Division of Neighborhood and Community Services offers unpaid internships to undergraduate or graduate students seeking a degree in Therapeutic Recreation requiring the completion of internship hours to satisfy course credit requirements. Please email Sandi Dallhoff, the Therapeutic Recreation Program Manager, or email Marjorie Burris, the Adult Day Health Program Manager.

The Inclusive Support Services Division of Neighborhood and Community Services offers unpaid internships to graduate students seeking a degree in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology requiring a FULL-TIME internship to satisfy graduation requirements.  Please email Jessica Schwab, the Clinical Director at the Infant and Toddler Connection.

The Inclusive Support Services Division of Neighborhood and Community Services offers a semester long (scheduling is flexible up to 24 hours per week) paid internship supporting cross divisional and project focused initiatives.  The internship provides the opportunity for students or recent graduates to explore career options, apply academic knowledge and skills, gain career skills, and build resumes. Assigned projects may involve research, data collection and interpretation, assisting in preparing/analyzing policies and procedures, and/or conducting public information and outreach. Duties may also include assisting staff with day-to-day operations in adult day health care, early intervention, or therapeutic recreation. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students of data science, human services, public policy, healthcare administration or other related fields. This internship may meet the requirements for a credit bearing course of academic study.  This internship will not meet the requirement for direct client/patient internship in a rehabilitation field. Work Student I

Salary:  $17.44 – 20,08 per hour (based upon experience)
Status:  Non-Merit/Part Time
Location: Various locations throughout Fairfax County

NCS fosters community engagement by identifying areas of need and enhancing the county's ability to serve those needs. The department connects residents with resources that promote equity and create positive outcomes for people of all ages and abilities.

We are seeking work students to join our dynamic team.  Under close instructional supervision from the assigned agency or department, the Work Student I will perform a range of entry-level professional duties designed to provide youth with hands-on work experience, career exploration opportunities, and industry exposure, supported by mentorship. Work Student I will share information, feedback, and ideas with committees, working groups, and advisory boards to help inform policies, research, practices, and programs. The Work Student I will also engage with the community to gather information, solicit input, assist participants in various recreational, educational, and cultural programs, and promote positive behavior interventions.  Additionally, the role involves supporting community outreach efforts to identify individuals and communities in alignment with the One Fairfax Policy.

Description:

Program Delivery:

  • Assists with populations with diverse functional, cultural, and economic needs in specific service areas based on established standards, best practices, and techniques. 
  • Assists with special event planning and logistics, including setup, breakdown, and cleanup.
  • Facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and cultural programs and actively promote positive behavior interventions.
  • Ensures the well-being of individuals and responds appropriately and promptly to any emergencies or urgent situations in the workplace.

Customer Service and Community Support:

  • Assists with community outreach efforts to identify individual(s) and communities in support of the One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy.
  • Applies the One Fairfax policy and trauma-informed and restorative justice practices to foster a welcoming, safe, and supportive program environment for participant(s) and the community at-large.
  • Supports the development and implementation of program adaptations and modifications to ensure successful inclusion for everyone.

Program Participation:

  • Observes, provides feedback, and shares lived experience with department staff by attending meetings, workshops, training sessions, and shadowing staff to learn about the organizational goals, procedures, and industry best practices.

Administrative Duties:

  • Greets customers, gives standard information in response to phone or in-person inquiries.
  • Monitors, reserves, and records the usage of facilities space for programs, activities, and events to include keeping maintenance records of recreation equipment to ensure safety and security.
  • Uses computer to prepare and complete required documents to include incident, inventory, and storage reports, responds to, and follow ups with, emails and electronic timesheets. 
  • Operates information systems, database management systems and customer relationship management systems to include purchasing membership, program registration, reports, and sales.

Physical Requirements:

Work is generally sedentary. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Administrative and supervisory activities will require ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

This role also contributes to community outreach efforts aligned with the One Fairfax policy, assisting in the identification and engagement of individuals and communities. Additionally, Work Student II engages in professional development activities—such as training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings—to deepen their understanding of organizational goals, operations, and best practices.  Other duties may include researching industry trends, competitors, or assigned projects, as well as utilizing systems for registration, customer relationship management, reporting, and sales.

  • Assists in conducting research on industry trends, competitors, or specific projects assigned by the supervisor. 
  • Participates in projects or community-related focus groups and advisory boards to provide relevant hands-on experience and technical assistance. 
  • Collaborates on the co-creation of policies, programs, practices, products, and services.

Customer Service and Community Support:

  • Assists with community outreach to identified individual(s) and communities in support of the One Fairfax Racial and Social Equity Policy.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of adaptations and modifications of programs to support the successful inclusion for all.
  • Consults and notifies supervisor(s) about any service navigation and health and human services needs or other issues to ensure successful participation in a wide range of activities, programs, and services.
