Therapeutic Recreation Services' aim is to provide opportunities for children and adults with disabilities so they may acquire the skills that enable them to participate in the recreation and leisure programs of their choice. Staff is committed to providing services, education, and resources that meet our participants' interests, needs, and abilities on the road toward lifelong participation and enjoyment in recreation and leisure activities. Staff also provides support and advocacy to individuals who wish to participate in general recreation activities

TRACERS allows customers to submit a majority of the registration materials for TRS programs online. All information entered on the forms will be saved and stored under your username and password.

Adult Social Club-Annandale/Fairfax

Ages: 22+


Annandale/Fairfax Adult Social Club is for adults ages 22+, with various developmental disabilities who live in the Fairfax, Annandale, Falls Church area.  Members must be able to participate in social and community activities (1:7 staff to participant ratio) with minimal support.  The group goes out 2-3 times a month and members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter.  Members will have the opportunity to socialize with new friends, learn to plan their own leisure and engage with their community.  They will experience a wide variety of local activities including sporting events, community events, outdoor activities, and much more.  Annual membership is $40.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $60.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership.  Transportation is not provided to the meeting site, but is provided from the meeting site to the activity. There are two meeting locations; one in Annandale and one in Fairfax.

Social Club Membership Requirements:
- Members of this Social Club must be able to:
    •  Participate independently in a social or group structure within a community environment
    •  Maintain self-control (i.e. no violent, abusive or aggressive behaviors)
    •  Maintain their own personal care and hygiene requirements (or provide an attendant)
    •  Self-administer and carry their own medication
    •  Applicants may be asked to come in for an interview or provide additional information to determine appropriate placement


Registration is currently open for the 2025 Annual Membership. Registration is ongoing and will be accepted year-round. You will not be able to sign up for monthly activities until you have completed the Annual Membership Registration.

Adult Social Club-Mount Vernon

Ages 22+


Mount Vernon Adult Social Club is for adults ages 22+, with various developmental disabilities who live in the Alexandria, Lorton, and Springfield areas.  Members must be able to participate in social and community activities (1:7 staff to participant ratio) with minimal support.  The group goes out 2-3 times a month and members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter.  Members will have the opportunity to socialize with new friends, learn to plan their own leisure and engage with their community.  They will experience a wide variety of local activities including sporting events, community events, outdoor activities, and much more.  Annual membership is $40.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $60.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership.    Transportation is not provided to the meeting site, but is provided from the meeting site to the activity. There are two meeting locations; one in Alexandria and one in Franconia.

- Members of this Social Club must be able to:
    •  Participate independently in a social or group structure within a community environment

Reston Adult Social Club is for adults ages 22+, with various developmental disabilities who live in the Reston, Herndon, Centreville and Chantilly areas.  Members must be able to participate in social and community activities (1:7 staff to participant ratio) with minimal support.  The group goes out 2-3 times a month and members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter.  Members will have the opportunity to socialize with new friends, learn to plan their own leisure and engage with their community.  They will experience a wide variety of local activities including sporting events, community events, outdoor activities, and much more.  Annual membership is $40.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $60.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership.    Transportation is not provided to the meeting site, but is provided from the meeting site to the activity. There are two meeting locations; one in Reston and one in Fairfax.

Dance Club

Ages: 18+


Get out your dancing shoes and get ready to show your moves at the Dance Club. Our Dance Club DJ will keep you moving with new tunes and old favorites. With a new theme each month and a group happy birthday party for everyone having a birthday that month, the Dance Club gives folks of all abilities a chance to socialize while listening to great music. The dances are held at the James Lee Community Center in Falls Church once a month on a Thursday from 7 to 8:30pm.  Dance Club members can reserve a spot for that month's dance beginning on the 1st of each month. Transportation is available upon request from one of 2 locations, to and from James Lee Community Center from Key MS and the Pennino building.

K.E.Y.S. Program (Keep Exercising Your Senses)

Individuals ages 22+


Serves: Individuals ages 22 and up with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum disorder.
  
Program Description: K.E.Y.S (Keep Exercising Your Senses) Program provides individuals the opportunity to explore a wide range of recreational activities through sensory based experiences. KEYS participants will get to explore a state-of-the-art sensory space, socialize with their peers and participate in a variety of activities that the Jim Scott Community Center offers.  

Keep exercising your senses! The K.E.Y.S Program will provide a lower ratio of (1:2/1:3) and staff will be able to provide the level of support needed for each participant to be successful.

Who is a good fit for this program? Adults who while in a community setting are able to:
• Interact with peers appropriately with minimal to moderate behavioral supports,
• Follow 1-2 step instructions with verbal prompts and physical cues,
• Need moderate assistance with personal care,
• Stay with a group with verbal prompts,
• Be successful in a 1:2 – 1:3 staff-to-participant ratio

Meet and Mingle Social Club

Ages: 22+


Meet and Mingle Adult Social Club is for adults ages 22+ who have a mild developmental and/or intellectual disability and require no or minimal supervision and are independent in their daily living activities.  Members will be supported by staff in a 1:10 ratio but will also have opportunities to engage more independently in the activities while out in the community.  The group goes out 2 times a month and members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter.   They will experience a wide variety of leisure and recreation activities to include cheering at hockey games, checking out exhibits at museums, having a summer BBQ, and much more.  Meet and Mingle operates year-round with activities on the weekends.  Annual membership is $40.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $70.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership.    Transportation is not provided to the meeting site, but is provided from the meeting site to the activity.   There are two meting locations; one in Annandale and one in Fairfax
Assessment/Interview Process:  Each member will be interviewed by a TRS staff to review leisure interest survey, discuss the program design and the responsibilities of each member.  Each member will receive a member handbook that describes the program and the duties of the members. Members will be asked questions regarding their independence, leisure interests, and abilities such as telling time and counting money. A TRS staff will assess the appropriateness of placement in the Meet and Mingle Social Club. If members do not meet the requirements for Meet and Mingle, TRS manager may suggest one of our other three Adult Social Clubs or many other recreation programs.

Meet and Mingle Membership Requirements:
-Members must be able to:
    •  Participate in a social or group structure with no to minimal supervision
    •  Be independent in all daily living tasks
    •  Be able to tell time and manage their own money
    •  Be unsupervised for short periods of time and get self to a predetermined location by a certain time
    •  Self-administer and carry own medication

Monday Bites

Individuals ages 13-22


TRS is excited to bring our Monday Bites cooking program to you this fall! Monday Bites will take place on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:15 p.m. and will give youth the opportunity to enhance their cooking skills by learning simple ways to provide meals for themselves and others. This 6-week course will encompass kitchen safety, learning how to follow a recipe, tips and tricks when shopping for ingredients, assembling simple, yet healthy meals, and education on healthy eating.

Who is a good fit for Monday Bites?
Individuals ages 13-22 with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or Autism Spectrum disorder who in a community setting are:
• Able to interact appropriately with peers with minimal behavior management (redirection, verbal prompts) in
         a 1:5, 1:6 ratio
• Follow multi-step instructions, ask for assistance, and convey feelings/needs appropriately
• Take care of personal care needs with minimal support (verbal cues)
• Remain with the group
• Have an interest in learning how to cook

Sports and Fitness

Ages: 16+


Looking to improve your muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility? Want to know more about nutrition and overall well-being? If so, the Sports and Fitness Program is for you. Geared toward participants with developmental disabilities, Sports and Fitness teaches basic skills in a variety of team and individual sports. Come on out, play a new sport, practice an old favorite, and stay healthy.

Program Location:
Washington Irving Middle School—8100 Old Keene Mill Rd, Springfield, VA 22152 (7th Grade Gym, Inside DOOR 2)

Program Time: 7:30-9pm

Tasty Tuesdays

Individuals Ages 22+


Come discover the joys of cooking with us in our new Tasty Tuesdays program! This cooking program for adults ages 22+ will give participants an opportunity to enhance their kitchen and cooking skills, learning simple and fun ways to create meals for themselves and others. Trailblazers Social Club (formerly Out & About/Weekenders)

Ages: 18+


The Trailblazers Social Club (formerly Out & About/Weekenders) is for participants’ ages 18+ with a primary physical disability (Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, etc.). The club meets two times each month to engage in leisure outings within the community.   Members are responsible for making suggestions and voting on the activities each quarter. Trailblazers fosters personal success and social growth through new friendships, participation in community events and leisure activities, development of leisure resources, and improving upon recreation skills. Annual membership is $40.00.  Trips and activities range in cost from free to $60.00 and those fees are not included in the annual membership. Transportation is not provided to the meeting location, but is provided from the meeting location to the activity.  There are two meeting locations; one in Annandale and one in Fairfax.

Staff to participant ratio is 1: 2 or 1:3 depending on the activity.
Trailblazers Membership Requirements:
-Members must be able to:
    •  Participate in a social or group structure within a community environment
    •  Assist in their own personal care and hygiene requirements (or provide an attendant)
    •  Maintain self-control (i.e. no violent, abusive or aggressive behaviors)
    •  Applicants may be asked to come in for an interview or provide additional information to


Personal Care:  Upon assessment TRS staff will work with member to determine personal care needs.  Members will train TRS staff on all areas related to their personal care.  Members will be required to bring all items needed for staff to provide personal care while in the community.  Every effort will be made to have staff of the same sex provide personal care.  No male staff members will change female participants; however, female staff may change male participants. If more attention is required for personal care, a member may be asked to provide their own care attendant or aid for activities.

Assessment/Interview Process:  Each member must be interviewed by a TRS program manager before being enrolled in this club.  During the interview, the staff member will review the applicants’ leisure interest survey; discuss the program design and the responsibilities of each member and assess personal and medical care needed for that applicant.  Staff for this program can be trained to administer most medical/personal care procedures (i.e. catheter, g-tubes, etc.) but will need time to get trained before the participant can start attending activities.
