Therapeutic Recreation Services' aim is to provide opportunities for children and adults with disabilities so they may acquire the skills that enable them to participate in the recreation and leisure programs of their choice. Staff is committed to providing services, education, and resources that meet our participants' interests, needs, and abilities on the road toward lifelong participation and enjoyment in recreation and leisure activities. Staff also provides support and advocacy to individuals who wish to participate in general recreation activities

TRACERS allows customers to submit a majority of the registration materials for TRS programs online. All information entered on the forms will be saved and stored under your username and password.

Adventure Series

Ages 10-22


Therapeutic Recreation’s newest program, “Adventure Series”, is designed to improve teamwork, social skills, increase self-esteem, and to give participants with varying abilities the opportunity to try new, exciting leisure activities that they may have never tried before. From snow tubing to zip lining, fun, laughter, and friendships are being formed to create lasting memories!

Participants must become members of the Adventure Series before being able to sign up for individual activities. Age ranges may vary depending on activity.

Participants must be able to meet all of the following criteria:
• Maintain a 1:4/5 staff-to-participant ratio and remain with the group
• Independent in personal care
• Independent with mobility
• Follow multi-step instructions
• Able to communicate needs
• Interact appropriately with peers
• Minimal behavior redirection and management

Participants may be required to meet with Program Manger prior to program acceptance to determine eligibility. Note: participants who require more support than the Adventure Series program is designed to provide are not eligible for participation. Caregiver Night Out

6-22


Caregiver Night Out is a great opportunity for participants to enjoy and explore leisure opportunities while providing parents/caregivers an evening out. Come join us for a fantastic evening of enjoying leisure activities, including art, sensory, cooking, and fitness/movement in a fun and structured environment.

On Sunday, November 11, 2018, participants will enjoy a Pizza Party for lunch and then will go explore the Hidden Oaks Nature Center

Caregivers Night Out on 11-11-18 includes:

* Program at Hidden Oaks Park and Scavenger Hunt

ESY (Secondary) Early Morning Drop-Off

Ages 13-22 years old.


ESY (Secondary) Early Morning Drop-Off is available at all three Therapeutic Recreation Summer camp sites:
Frost Middle
Key Middle
Herndon Middle
Secondary ESY students are able to be dropped off with Therapeutic Recreation staff from 8:30-10:00 am before the start of the ESY. They will be provided recreational activities during that time period. Students will be walked to the ESY classrooms at 10:00 am for the start of ESY. The cost per week of early drop-off is $20.

Friday Night Voyager

For participants ages 13-22


Friday Night Voyager aims to build participants’ leisure independence by focusing on targeted leisure skill development within the group’s specific areas of interest.  The group will talk about their interests at the beginning of the program and vote on the leisure activities they want to pursue as a group for that session.  For each session the groups will focus on effective communication, teamwork, socialization and goal setting skills.   Participants will engage in a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to work towards being more independent in the leisure and recreation activities of their choice.    

Who is a good fit for Friday Night Voyager?
Individuals ages 13-22 with high functioning intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or Autism Spectrum disorder who in a community setting are able to:
• Interact appropriately with peers with minimal behavioral management assistance (redirection, verbal prompts) in a 1:5-1:6 ratio
• Follow multi-step instructions, ask for assistance and convey feelings/needs appropriately
• Take care of personal care needs with minimal support (verbal cues)
• Remain with the group

JPMF Splash Water Safety Lessons

For ages 5-22


JPMF Splash, a water safety and skills program, teaches individuals with disabilities how to be safe and have fun in and around the water. This unique program was created by The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund, and it is based on five water safety rules developed specifically for individuals with disabilities. Under the guidance of a water safety instructor and therapeutic recreation staff, volunteer swim buddies are paired with participants to assist them with skill building games and exercises. Participants will learn how to enter and exit the water safely, have fun in the water by socializing with  peers, and follow water safety rules including Always Swim with a Buddy and Stop, Look and Listen when the Lifeguard Blows the Whistle.

Participation Requirements:
-Be able to interact safely with peers.
-Follow staff directions with moderate prompts.
-Participant appropriately in a 1:3 ratio

Power Soccer

5 and Up


Power Soccer is designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. Athletes' disabilities include quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and many others. Power Soccer is hosted in the gymnasium at Irving Middle School. Two teams of four players attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in a skilled and challenging game.  This is a recreational program with a focus on developing skills, team building, and fun.  Opportunities to participate competitively are available as well. For those ages 5 and up who are able to drive their own power wheelchair. Eight week fall and winter sessions meet on Saturdays at Irving Middle school in Springfield, from 9:30-12pm.

Summer Pre-School Mini Camp

2 years - 5 years *not yet completed kindergarten*


TR Pre-School Mini Camp is a structured play program for pre-school children ages 2-5 years (not yet completed kindergarten) with disabilities that provides opportunities for fun, friendships, and exploration. Children will participate in activities designed to promote learning, explore stimuli, and introduce and develop new skills. From learning to take turns to imaginative play, come explore the world around you.

SUMMER TIME CALLS FOR FRIENDS, FUN, AND SUMMER CAMP! COME JOIN US AT TRS SUMMER CAMP 2019! The summer will be packed full of special events, art activities, sensory play, games, sports, field trips, and music activities.  All programming is designed to meet the different interests and abilities of the campers.  All camp sites are open to participants with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and/or attention deficit disorders. Each site will have a variety of staff to participant ratios available to meet the different needs of campers. Ratios range from 1:2 to 1:5 at each site*.
*Note: Participants who require a constant 1:1, may need more support than this camp structure can provide. If you are unsure if your son/daughter will be successful in the program, please call the main TRS office to discuss eligibility.

JPMF Splash Camp

Ages 5-22


The JPMF Splash Swim Camp is a water skills and safety program that teaches children with disabilities how to be safe and have fun in and around the water. The program is based on five water safety rules developed specifically for children with disabilities. The program includes pool time, games and crafts that revolve around the following important water safety rules. Always Swim with a Buddy, No Running, No Pushing, Stop, Look and Listen- when the lifeguard blows the whistle, Blow Bubbles When Under Water, and Put Feet Down and Stand Up When in Trouble.

Participants must be able to:
-              interact safely with peers
-              follow staff directions with moderate prompts
-              be willing to try a variety of activities and
-              participate appropriately in a 1:3 ratio

S.M.I.L.E

Saturday Morning Integrated Leisure Experience
Ages: 2-5 (Preschool)


The S.M.I.L.E. program is an integrated play program for children with and without disabilities. From the "Good-Morning Song" to the "Good-Bye Song", children can participate in a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, sports, group games, and more! S.M.I.L.E. encourages appropriate social and behavioral interactions in a structured play environment. S.M.I.L.E. operates on Saturday mornings from 10am-1pm at the Reston Teen Center during the fall, winter, and spring. Program cost is $96.00 per session, scholarships are available. Saturday Discovery

Ages: 6-22  (must have completed kindergarten)


Saturday Discovery provides individuals the opportunity to discover their leisure interests by exploring various leisure options such as arts, sports, sensory, dance, and music, all adapted to meet their individual needs in a structured environment.  In this newly designed, lower ratio program (1:2/1:3) staff will be able to provide the level of support needed for each participant to be successful. Participants need to bring a packed lunch.

Participation requirements
Saturday Discovery Participants must:
-              Be able to interact safely with peers
-              Follow staff directions with moderate prompts
-              Be willing to try a variety of activities and
-              Participate appropriately in a 1:2-1:3 staff to participant ratio

Note: participants who are currently exhibiting frequent aggressive behaviors that are deemed harmful or injurious to others or who require a 1:1 for extended periods of time may need more support than the Saturday Discovery program is designed to provide.  If you are unsure if your son/daughter will be successful in this program, please call the main TRS offices and an initial eligibility assessment can be conducted.  TRS understands that behaviors change over time therefore reevaluation for program placement is available on a semi-annual basis.

Wheelchair Sports

Ages: 4-22 (must still be enrolled in high school)


Fairfax Falcons wheelchair sports program is a dynamic team of athletes that provide children and adolescents ages 4 to 22 with a wide range of lower extremity disability, such as paralysis, amputation, radiological evidence of limb shortening, spina bifida, a spinal cord injury, or cerebral palsy, with a wide variety of sports experiences, teamwork, social skills, and fitness skills.While all our athletes compete in wheelchairs, not all athletes use wheelchairs outside of sports. The program is open to Fairfax County and non-county residents.  Fairfax Falcons compete in tournaments with players from up and down the East Coast. No worries if you’re new to wheelchair sports; there are different skill levels to include all players. Wheelchair Sports and Fitness meets year-round on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church. Wheelchair sports offers skill development in many sports including track and field, tennis, basketball and golf. Athletes compete in wheelchairs for most sports, however not all athletes use wheelchairs outside of sports.  All players must be able to push their own wheelchair. Levels of Play
• Novice - Athletes ages 8 and under, focus on development of chair skills, communication, and ball handling
• Prep - Athletes 13 and under
• Varsity - Athletes 22 and under

Practices are on Saturdays from 9-11 am (Varsity/Junior Varsity team) and 10-Noon (Prep team) at the James Lee Community Center.
