2012 Tapestry for Tormorrow Art Contest
Attention artists of all ages! Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) is now accepting applications for our 2011 Tapestry for Tomorrow art contest. The theme for this year’s contest is “Communities Connecting Through Artistic Expression.” If you are a member of any NCS program or are a Fairfax County Public School student, you are eligible to participate in this contest. If you are not a member, it is never too late to become one. Registration for the contest is free. Prizes valued up to $200 will be awarded to those who best capture the contest theme. All entries must be submitted to an NCS community center listed in the application guidelines the week of March 26 – 30, 2012.
Contest: Self-exploration and appreciation for the arts is the goal of Tapestry for Tomorrow. Although the Tapestry for Tomorrow program recognizes those entries that best interpret the theme, winning is not the main emphasis. Participation in the program is a great way for artists to explore and learn about various art forms. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges everyone to use their critical thinking skills and their creative talents to create art that supports a specific theme.
Eligibility:This competition is for all ages. Any person who is a resident of Fairfax County and is a registered participant at one of the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services programs or the Fairfax County Public Schools may enter. If you are not a member, it’s never too late to join! The following are the judging categories:
- Elementary School – Grades K-5 (ages 5-10)
- Middle School - Grades 6-8 (ages 11-13)
- High School - Grades 9-12 (ages 14-19)
- Adults/Seniors (ages 20+)
- People’s Choice
Art Areas: Photography and Two-Dimensional Art
Rules: All artists must submit a completed competition application and artwork with the completed Entry form labe lattached to the back of the artwork. Artwork must be delivered to a location listed on the back of theapplication the week of March 26 – 30.
Awards: Individuals entering artwork in the Tapestry for Tomorrow program will receive a certificate for participating. The artwork will be on display in the lower level of the Fairfax County Government Center form April 21 – May 12, 2012. The entries chosen as the best representation of “Communities Connecting Through Artistic Expression” will receive a prize with a value of up to $200.
Recognition Ceremony and Reception: Each region will have a gallery show that will be held sometime between the weeks of April 2 -April 13. Twenty-five finalists will be selected from each region for the art show and recognition ceremony to announce the winners of the competition.
The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m.in the lower level of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. Artists and their families are invited to attend this free event.
