Former Redskin James Thrash to Honor County’s “Champions of Character”

Tuesday, October 15 - 6 p.m.

Fairfax County Government Center – 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035

Join the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Athletic Council (FCAC), TD Bank and former Washington Redskins Wide Receiver James Thrash on October 15 at 6 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center as they honor youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor.  The Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards will recognize 36 individuals for showing that there are plenty of local role models who demonstrate positive character in sports.

The Champions of Character program aims to help restore the ennobling tradition of amateur athletic competition.  The awards pay tribute to the outstanding youth and adults who have demonstrated extraordinary service in the sports community while modeling the basic traits of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

James Thrash spent seven seasons as a wide receiver with the Washington Redskins (1997-2000, 2004-08) and spent the 2009 season as the head of player development for the team before turning to motivational speaking. Today, he speaks to school groups on the importance of leadership and character, as well as teaching life skills to youth and adults.

When approached to take part in this year’s ceremony, Thrash said he would be honored and “applauds the county for recognizing those individuals who are out there preserving the integrity of the sport.”  Thrash added that coaches need to realize that sports are not all about winning. “It’s about how we act and behave around our children, and teaching our children life lessons through sports and being positive role models.”

The Champions of Character event, which coincides with National Character Counts Month, is presented by the FCAC with help from the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and is sponsored this year by TD Bank. Honorees were selected from those nominated by coaches, players and others in the local sports community. Awards will be presented to one winner in each category—female player, male player, coach, parent— from each magisterial district in the county.
