Building A System of Prevention:
A Foundation for the Future
Fairfax County has undertaken a multi-disciplinary effort to improve the lives of children, youth, and families through a comprehensive system of prevention: a collaborative and integrated approach to achieving common goals.
We see children and youth in the context of their families, and we see families in the context of their neighborhoods and communities. A strong systems approach to prevention includes strategies that build on the strengths of individuals, families, neighborhoods, and communities.
Our strategies must take into account disparities and inequities related to race, ethnicity, geography, and socio-economic status. Our programs, policies, and practices must be competent and responsive to the diverse populations making up and enhancing our county.
Most importantly, a prevention-based system must be a partnership between government agencies and the community to build capacity, ensure sustainability, and build on the strengths of our residents.
