Head Start and Early Head Start

Give Your Child a Head Start

Head Start is a federal program that serves children up to the age of five, and pregnant women, from low-income families. Head Start helps prepare children for success in school through:

Education

• Early childhood education;
• Services for children with disabilities.

Health, Nutrition and Mental Health

• Healthy meals and snacks;
• Helping pregnant women find pre-natal care;
• Helping families find health care, including dental and mental health care.

Family Services

• Parenting workshops, events and one-on-one training;
• Giving parents the chance to be Head Start volunteers;
• Helping parents find job training, transportation and other community services.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Head Start is based upon local and federal income and child age requirements. Ten percent of Head Start enrollment is to serve children with special needs. Children with disabilities are integrated into the Head Start Program.

To enroll a child in the Head Start program, the parent or guardian must:

• Contact the program.
• Apply to the program.
• Attend the program orientation.
