The Institute for Early Learning

Research on brain development and learning shows the importance of children’s early experiences in creating “curious, confident and able learners.” This research has also changed our understanding of how and when children gain reading and writing skills. As a result, there has been a growing emphasis on "emerging literacy" – the term used to describe the experiences and actions children use to form the foundation for reading and writing.

In 2002 the Office for Children launched the Institute for Early Learning. This initiative has expanded the scope of training opportunities for early childhood professionals in Fairfax County. The Institute offers the early childhood professional community training about early learning and development. The Institute helps early childhood professionals build skills to lead the way to literacy (PDF, large file).

The Institute responds to the need for better understanding of principles of early learning and emerging literacy by offering many new workshops and courses. These are announced regularly in the Institute for Early Learning training catalog (PDF) of courses and workshops.
