School Readiness Collaborative

Starting school! These two words bring to mind a vivid image of young children heading off to kindergarten – an image filled with family pride and the hope of a new beginning.

The Office for Children's School Readiness Collaborative, launched in 2006 through a Virginia Early Childhood Partnership grant, works with educators and parents to help children enter school ready to succeed.

Quality preschool programs strengthen children’s love of learning, which sets the stage for success in school. Child care professionals provide learning experiences that prepare children to transition into kindergarten.

Transitions work best when partnerships link children, families, schools and preschool programs before kindergarten begins. The School Readiness Collaborative works with principals, elementary school teachers, child care professionals, parents and others to support young children’s school readiness. Our partners include Fairfax County Public Schools, the Northern Virginia Community College and Fairfax Futures.

These elementary schools and their neighboring early childhood programs recently joined the collaborative: Centre Ridge Elementary School in Centreville, Hybla Valley Elementary School in Alexandria, Lynbrook Elementary School in Springfield and Providence Elementary School in Fairfax City.

Schools and neighborhoods already in the program are: Annandale Terrace Elementary School, Freedom Hill Elementary School in Falls Church, Hollin Meadows Elementary School in Alexandria and Lake Anne Elementary School in Reston.

The School Readiness Collaborative also provides a common understanding of what young children should know when they enter kindergarten, and gives child care professionals the knowledge and skills they need to set the stage for children's success in school. Our goals are being accomplished through the neighborhood school readiness teams, and these projects:

The development of early learning guidelines that help give child care professionals clear expectations about how young children learn and how to support their development.

A School Readiness Certificate which gives child care providers the knowledge and skills they need to help children make successful transitions to school.
