About the Office for Children

The Fairfax County Office for Children, established in 1975 by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, advances the care, education and healthy development of children from birth through elementary school. Office for Children programs include:

Child Care Assistance and Referral, 703-449-8484. Provides financial assistance for child care to Fairfax County families with low to moderate incomes who are working or are in education or training programs. CCAR also offers information about Fairfax County child care providers and centers, tips for choosing quality child care, and assistance with identifying child care options.

Community Education and Provider Services, 703-324-8100. Helps Fairfax County residents who care for up to five children in their homes meet the legal requirement of having a family child care permit. Administers the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program, which helps ensure children receive healthy meals and snacks while in care.

Fairfax County Employees' Child Care Center, 703-324-7370. Provides high-quality care for 6-week to 5-year-old children of Fairfax County government employees.

Head Start and Early Head Start, 703-324-8290. Serves children from birth up to the age of 5, and pregnant women, from families with low incomes. Head Start provides an educational program for children, and health and social services for children and their parents.

Institute for Early Learning, 703-324-3044. Offers training and professional development opportunities to the Fairfax County child care community.

School Age Child Care, 703-449-8989. Provides fun, safe and educational care for children in kindergarten through sixth grade before school, after school and during school vacations. SACC centers are located in most Fairfax County public elementary schools, as well as in the Key and Kilmer Centers, which serve 5-21 year-olds who have multiple disabilities.

School Readiness, 703-324-8000. Brings community organizations, county agencies, public schools, families and child care professionals together to ensure children have smooth transitions from child care to school.
