Winter 2014 SACC Spotlight

Children from the SACC programs at Belle View, Bucknell, Bush Hill, Cameron, Clermont, Groveton, Hybla Valley and Rose Hill created beautiful holiday wreaths
for senior citizens residing at the Gum Springs Glen Senior Apartments, a retirement community for active seniors. The 60 residents enjoyed a holiday tree trimming social
where they were able to choose their favorite wreath to decorate their door for the holidays. A total of 70 unique wreaths were hand-made by the SACC children

Dranesville SACC is helping the environment (and having fun!) by Upcycling. Upcycling is the art of reusing unwanted items by converting them into something better!

Children at Laurel Ridge SACC enjoyed a presentation by Randall Miller, a Smithsonian volunteer and SACC parent, of exhibits borrowed from the Insect Zoo of the
Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The children used magnifying glasses to examine the interesting collection of insects as Mr. Miller explained about their characteristics,
habitats and behavior.

At Lemon Road SACC, children enjoyed a Winter Wonderland Ball family event. Children wrote and presented their own speech explaining why they should be nominated
as Frost Prince and Princess or Ice King and Queen. Working together the children and SACC staff decorated the gym as a majestic winter wonderland. The day of the ball,
children and their families enjoyed dancing and the crowning of the Royal Frost Court.

Children at Woodley Hills SACC have been learning about the four seasons. They have enjoyed logging the daily temperature and recording weather changes, as well as learning
about how changes in the atmosphere affect plant and animal life, air quality and more. Meteorologist Amelia Segal  from Storm Team 4 visited Woodley Hills SACC to talk with
children about how science and technology are used to forecast the weather and predict certain weather related outcomes.
