The Fairfax County Commission for Women is seeking a college or high school student interested in serving on the Commission from September 2012 through May 2014. The student will serve as a voting member, aid the Commission in gaining perspective on issues facing young women and serve as a conduit of information to peer groups and student organizations. The Commission will serve as a mentor in helping the student get involved with and understand issues facing women and girls in Fairfax County.

The mission of the Commission for Women is “to promote the full equality of women and girls in Fairfax County.” It analyzes barriers to women’s equality, gaps in services for women, and emerging trends and concerns affecting women and girls. The Commission advises the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on how to address these problems and provides leadership in implementing solutions.

Applicants must be:

  •  Residents of Fairfax County who attend school in Fairfax County
  •  College students
    •  Enrolled in at least one college-level class
    •  May not enter their senior year in the Fall of 2012
  • High School students
    • Sophomores or juniors in the Fall of 2012    

The student representative must be able to attend monthly meetings and provide a summary of accomplishments at the end of the year.

Interested students should submit a resume (including interests, organization involvement, and education) and at most a one-page statement describing why they wish to serve on the Commission for Women. Email the resume and statement to Michelle Mueller at
