Heating and cooling costs can be a significant strain on household budgets. There are several options for energy assistance programs:
- Cooling Assistance helps keep vulnerable Fairfax County residents cool during the summer months. To be eligible, at least one household member must be: 60 or older, 5 or younger, or disabled according to Social Security, Medicaid or 100% Veteran’s Administration. Applications accepted June 15-August 15.
- Fuel Assistance helps pay heating costs for eligible households. Applications accepted from the second Tuesday in October through the second Friday in November. Approvals are notified in December and benefits are paid out starting in January.
- Crisis Assistance supports households facing a “no heat” situation, like broken equipment or a disconnection notice. Applications accepted November 1-March 15.
- Senior Cool Care provides air conditioning units or fans for eligible older adults (age 60+). Program is open May through October.
The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides financial assistance to households with eligible children. TANF participants also have access to the Virginia Initiative for Education and Work (VIEW) Program to support the journey to self-sufficiency.
Finding affordable child care can be a huge challenge for families and can even make it difficult to find and keep a job. Child care assistance helps eligible families with the cost of child care from birth to age 12 in family child care homes, centers and school-aged child care.
