Fairfax County to Participate in Bike to Work Day May 15
Residents in Fairfax County will celebrate Bike to Work Day on Friday,
May 15, by biking to their workplaces throughout the county. Fairfax
County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is participating with the
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) and the Washington
Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) to host one of the nation’s largest
“Bike to Work Day” region-wide events. There will be 23 pit stops
across the region—six of which are in Fairfax County—where riders can
stop, grab a snack, get their bicycle tuned up, and enter to win some
cool bike accessories.
There will be six pit stops set up in Fairfax County. The county's Department of Transportation will sponsor two — one at Fairfax Corner (6:30 – 9 a.m.) and another at Springfield/Metro Park at Walker Lane(6:30 - 8:30 a.m.). The other four pit stop locations are Reston Town Center(6:30 – 9 a.m.); Vienna at Whole Foods and the W&OD Trail (6:30 - 8:30 a.m.); Fairfax City at Van Dyck Park (6 - 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 - 7 p.m.); Tysons Corner at Booz Allen Hamilton, 8283 Greensboro Drive(6:30 – 9 a.m.). Bicyclists can choose a pit stop close to their homes or offices.
If a commute is too long or too challenging, riders are invited to “rack n’ ride”—load their bikes onto a Connector bus’s bicycle rack that day—and ride for free. For more information on how to use the front-mount bike racks, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/bikehowto.htm.
The annual event, a part of the COG Commuter Connections program, is held every spring to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycling to work. Bike to Work Day is an opportunity to encourage people to consider bicycling as a commuter option. It’s fun, healthy and green. Participants who register with WABA will get a T-shirt and be eligible to win prizes. Additional information is available on the WABA web site at www.waba.org.
To find the most convenient bicycle route, contact the pit stop managers listed on WABA’s Bike to Work Day web page at http://www.waba.org/events/btwd/index.php, or contact the Fairfax County Department of Transportation’s bicycle coordinator at 703 877-5600, TTY 711, or email bicycleprograms@fairfaxcounty.gov.
