Oakton Congestion and Safety Study

Study Background

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is conducting a congestion mitigation and safety study for the Oakton area. This study originated from a Follow-On Motion authorized by the Board of Supervisors in response to the approval of the AT&T Oakton site specific plan amendment. The study will include:

  • Transportation analysis to test the effects on congestion from enhanced, modified, and/or new roadway connections, lane configurations, and other improvements.
  • Recommended improvements to congestion will also consider the impacts to the bicycle, pedestrian, and bus networks in the study area, including expected impacts to safety for all roadway users.
  • Input from community members will help determine recommendations for near-term and long-term improvements, and the study report will provide planning level cost and implementation schedule estimates.

Public Meeting Information

FCDOT hosted a community workshop to introduce the Oakton Congestion and Safety Study on Nov. 13, 2025, at Oakton High School. Attendees had the opportunity to share ideas to improve transportation in Oakton, and discuss priorities for short- and long-term improvements.

FCDOT will present a summary of the ideas from the November workshop at a public meeting in 2026. For the meeting announcement:
