About Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

The VIPS program was established by the Chief of Police to give
residents an opportunity to serve in unpaid, non-uniformed positions to
augment the work of the Police
Department. The duties and responsibilities of our volunteer force
continually evolve and change, adjusting to the needs of the department.
All assignments are open to VIPS throughout the department. Our VIPS
peform administrative duties such as:

Data entry, filing, copying of reports

Translators
-
Computer activities
-
Inventory control and record keeping
-
Role-playing at the Criminal Justice Academy and during other
exercises
- Photography
Eligibilty Requirements
To become a member of the Fairfax County Police Department's VIPS program, you must be:
- At least 21 years of age (no maximum age limit for service in the program)
- In good physcial health
- Able to pass a comprehensive police background check
- Able to pass an interview with police supervisors
Selection Process
The selection, appointment and tenure of VIPS personnel will be determined by the Chief of Police.
Assignment of Personnel
Whenever possible, we will strive to assign VIPS to areas of interest and/or preferred physical locations. However, the needs of the department are of primary concern in determining where VIPS are ultimately assigned.VIPS may be assigned to more than one assignment location at a time.
