One in four Virginians is affected by sexual or domestic violence before the age of 18. Whether a young person is a witness, victim or perpetrator of violence, the trauma can have a lifelong impact. Proceeds from a new special interest license plate will fund prevention programs in Fairfax County and local communities. Together, we can help to prevent violent acts before they occur.

The Fairfax County Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (OFWDSVS) is joining the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (Action Alliance) to promote the "Peace Begins at Home" license plate. Proceeds will benefit the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance's Building Healthy Futures Fund, which supports a variety of violence prevention efforts across the state.

Pre-registration for the 'Peace Begins at Home' plate costs $25 per year and is currently in progress. Registration will continue until June 30, 2012.

For an application to pre-register for the license plate, contact Jennifer McPherson or 703-324-3586, TTY 711. For more information, visit the Action Alliance website.

The Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance provides support to local rape crises centers and domestic violence agencies through training and technical assistance as well as operating the statewide Family Violence and Sexual Assault Hotline.

Together we can help to prevent violent acts BEFORE they occur.

Collecting Phones

The Fairfax County Commission for Women is collecting used cell phones, chargers and batteries to help victims of domestic violence.

The Commission is conducting the drive in partnership with Verizon Wireless' HopeLine Program, which collects used wireless phones and equipment and refurbishes or recycles them. Last year over 1,700 cell phones were collected and resulted in a $7,500 donation from the Verizon Wireless HopeLine to Artemis House. For more information call or visit the Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services at 703-324-5730; TTY 711 or visit the Commission for Women web site.
