General Information Regarding Medicaid
Who qualifies for Medicaid benefits?
You may qualify for Medicaid benefits if you meet any of the following guidelines:
- You are 65 years old or older.
- You are legally blind.
- You are disabled.
- You are in a nursing home.
- You receive hospice care.
- You receive Medicare Part A.
- You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- You are a refugee who has been in the U.S. for eight months or less.
- You have children under age 18.
- You are pregnant.
- You are 18 years old or younger.
- You are in foster care.
What services are offered under Medicaid?
If you are eligible for full Medicaid coverage, the following services are typically provided:
- Payment of your Medicare premium
- Inpatient hospital care
- Outpatient hospital care
- Physician’s services
- Psychiatric services
- Prescription drugs when ordered by a physician
- Home health services
- Clinic services
- Podiatry services
- Emergency transportation
- Renal (kidney) dialysis clinic visits
- Certain supplies and equipment
- Skilled and intermediate nursing home care
- Community based care
- Rehabilitation services
- Pre-natal care
Medicaid can pay for all or a portion of nursing home care.
- If you need Medicaid to pay for nursing home care, your spouse does not have to be impoverished.
- If you are receiving nursing home care, your spouse may be able to retain some income for living in the community.
- Medicaid may be able to pay for intermediate nursing care in your home or in an Adult Day Health Care Center.
Did you know…?
- Medicare or private health insurance will not prevent you from being eligible for Medicaid.
- If you have medical expenses, you might be eligible for Medicaid regardless of your income.
- The home in which you live is not counted as a resource and does not affect your eligibility for Medicaid (unless you are institutionalized).

How do I apply for Medicaid?
You may call or visit any of our Department of Family Services offices to apply for Medicaid. Our office hours are 7 a.m to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
What if I do not qualify for Medicaid?
If you do not qualify for Medicaid, you may be able to access other community resources for health care. Learn about health care services offered through the Community Health Care Network.
