October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is observed nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) to highlight domestic violence and its impact on families and communities. Many events were planned to highlight DVAM.

According to 2007 data from the Fairfax County Police Department, there were more than 9,000 domestic violence-related calls for service and more than 1,800 arrests for domestic violence.

In Fairfax County, the Victim Assistance Network (VAN), part of the Office for Women and Domestic and Sexual Violence Services in the Department of Family Services, provides free individual counseling to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
