Fairfax 50+ Plan Proposed Initiatives: Community Engagement

Increase Employment and Entrepreneurship Opportunities
This initiative includes a list of ideas such as: create an online Web page for residents to find employment and entrepreneur resources; promote those resources to Chambers of Commerce; partner with Small Business Development Centers; identify existing funding sources for entrepreneurs 50+; promote the value of older workers; and sponsor a 50+ Employment and Entrepreneurship Expo.

Neighbor to Neighbor
Increase awareness of neighborhood models such as the villages model as well as online tools that facilitate neighborhood interaction and support.

Fairfax 50+ Community
Support the development of Fairfax 50+ Community, an online social media platform that integrates county and non-county service information and offers free interactive Web space to 50+ groups. This includes neighborhoods, villages, sports clubs, support groups, volunteer groups, arts groups, reading/learning groups, etc. The site is currently under development.

Venture into Volunteering
Expand "Venture into Volunteering," a marketing effort to recruit 50+ volunteers. This successful partnership program periodically sponsors recruitment fairs offering volunteer opportunities with county and nonprofit agencies across the county.

GrandInvolve Program: Intergenerational Volunteering in Elementary Schools
Support the development of the GrandInvolve program. This program recruits older adult volunteers to work in local schools with low achievement levels and high poverty and minority enrollment. A pilot program has begun in one county elementary school.

Kaleidoscope 50+: Perspectives on Culture
Promote cultural diversity as an important value among older adults through expanding the Kaleidoscope program. This program will increase intercultural discussions and understanding.

Library Opportunities for 50+
The Fairfax County Public Library will conduct an analysis of their programs and services in light of their ability to meet the growing demands of the 50+ population. The results of the analysis will be used to explore and implement more opportunities for the library to better serve this population. The library will also create a 50+ Adults link on its Web page to a rich resource page.
