Resources for grandparents and other relatives raising children
in Fairfax County and the Cities of Falls Church and Fairfax

In 2007, the U.S. Census counted 3,498 grandparents in Fairfax County raising their grandchildren. Many different situations prompted these relatives to open their hearts and homes to these children. The Fairfax County Kinship Care Committee, working with Fairfax County Public Schools and the county's departments of Family Services and Community and Recreation Services, helps these special families in Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church in various ways.


Free Support Groups for Kinship Caregivers

Grandparents and other relatives who are raising children are invited to the county's upcoming support groups. Free child care is available during the meeting. Participants must live in Fairfax County, or the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. To register, please call the Kinship Registration Line at 703-324-5447, TTY 711. Indicate whether you need childcare or reasonable ADA accommodations.

  • The North County Support Group meets at the Pennino Building, Suite 232, 12011 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax from
    7 to 8:30 p.m. on these dates in 2012:
    •  February 21
    •  March 6 and 20
    •  April 10 and 24
    •  May 8 and 22
    •  June 5


  • The South County Support Group meets at Bryant Alternative High School, Rooms 28 and 29 (Adult Ed. entrance), 2709 Popkins Lane, Alexandria from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on these dates in 2012:
    •  February 16
    •  March 1 and 15
    •  April 12 and 26
    •  May 10 and 24
    •  June 7

Kinship Care Resource Guide

The Kinship Care Resource Guide lists over 100 pages of programs and services that are applicable for Kinship Care families in Northern Virginia. The guide includes eligibility requirements, cost, and contact information for programs and services such as: school registration, child care, medical and legal assistance, services for older adults, recreational activities, and many other topics.
