Reading Tails Program Guidelines

This session of Reading Tails is for groups, such as Girl Scout Troops. Please Note: For group registrations, the registration number is set to "one seat" for each group.

Please Note: For group registrations, the registration number is set to "one seat" for each group.

Please follow these guidelines for group sessions:

  • Maximum Capacity: 25 Attendees (Including Chaperones)
We cannot exceed 25 total attendees per session, including all participants and chaperones. When registering, please count every person who will attend.

  • Minimum Group Size: 10 Participants
We are only able to accommodate group reservations of 10 or more participants at this time. Unfortunately, smaller groups are not possible right now as we focus on making the most efficient use of our resources. We are working to accommodate smaller groups in the future—stay tuned!

  • To ensure everyone has a chance to participate in the popular Reading Tails program, please limit your booking to once per quarter. Thank you for your understanding!

Where to Go

  • The Fairfax County Animal Shelter Michael R. Frey Campus is located at 4500 West Ox Rd., Fairfax, VA 22030. Parking is very limited at this location. Please consider carpooling when possible!

Human and Shelter Animal Safety Guidelines

  • Chaperones are entirely responsible for their children.
  • Please note that petting an animal is not guaranteed. Sometimes we do not have pets who are comfortable with children, large groups, etc.
  • Kids should not stick fingers through cage bars, tap on glass, scream, run or conduct themselves in a way that makes the Fairfax County Animal Shelter staff or volunteers concerned for the safety of the group OR the shelter animals. Disregard for safety and conduct may result in the immediate dismissal of attendee(s).
  • Potential allergens in the shelter include animal dander, peanut butter (used in Kong toys for the dogs), hay (used in the small animal room) and pine litter (for some of our cat residents).
  • During inclement weather, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter reserves the right to cancel Reading Tails to ensure the safety of our volunteers and tour attendees, but we will reschedule as soon as possible.
