Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, and local and state offices are on the ballot, including the Board of Supervisors, School Board, Sheriff and Virginia General Assembly. Here’s what you need to know about how and where to vote.

WHERE AND WHEN TO VOTE ON ELECTION DAY, NOV. 7

Every polling place will be open on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  If you are in line by 7 p.m., you will be able to vote.

Before you vote, double-check your registration status and polling place. You can look up this information on the state’s online portal, or call the Office of Elections at 703-222-0776, TTY 711.

If you are not registered to vote yet, you may complete a same day voter registration on Election Day, but you must go to the polling place for the precinct where you live. To find your precinct and polling place, enter your address in the county's My Neighborhood application or call the Office of Elections at 703-222-0776, TTY 711.

By state law, voters who register same day must vote a provisional ballot, and the Fairfax County Electoral Board will determine which provisional ballots are counted.

WHAT TO BRING WHEN VOTING

By law, voters must show identification when they vote — but a photo ID, like a driver’s license, is no longer required. You may use as ID a copy of your:

  • Current utility bill.
  • Bank statement.
  • Government check.
  • Paycheck.
  • Other government document with the voter’s name and address.

Of course, photo IDs remain an acceptable form of identification — and you can even use an expired Virginia driver’s license no matter how long ago it expired.

KNOW WHAT'S ON THE BALLOT

There are many local and state offices on the ballot:

  • Board of Supervisors (Chairman and all districts)
  • School Board (At Large and all districts)
  • Commonwealth’s Attorney
  • Sheriff
  • Virginia House of Delegates and Senate (All districts)
  • Clerk of the Court
  • Towns of Clifton and Vienna (Mayor and Town Council)
  • Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District

There is also a $435 million public school bond on the ballot. If approved, the public schools’ plans include using this money to plan and design, renovate and build schools.

RETURN YOUR MAIL-IN BALLOT

On Election Day, you may return your mail-in ballot at a drop box at any polling place, or the 24-hour secure, drop-off box available outside the Fairfax County Government Center.

If you plan to mail your ballot back, it must be postmarked on Nov. 7, and the Office of Elections must receive it by noon on Monday, Nov. 13.

As a result of a new state law, you must now include the last four digits of your social security number and year of birth when filling out your return envelope for your mail-in ballot. This information will be behind a mailing flap so it won't be publicly visible. Don’t forget to sign the envelope too.
