Board of Supervisors - Dranesville District Alert:
Fairfax County is considering a new waste collection system through Unified Sanitation Districts (USD). Under USD, the County would directly manage waste hauling contracts with private collectors, ensuring more consistent service, transparent pricing and better coordination. Initial analysis indicates a cost savings to the average resident for comparable services provided today. USD offers additional benefits, including reduced truck traffic on neighborhood streets, lower greenhouse gas emissions and a decrease in road maintenance costs, while also enhancing simplicity in waste collection and contributing to a better overall quality of life in the community.
The first step is approval by the Board of Supervisors to begin the five-year waiting period to consider implementing USD. Board approval to start the five-year process does not mean the County will necessarily implement USD. During the five-year period, the County will conduct more detailed analyses, incorporating additional input from the Board of Supervisors and the community regarding the types of services to be included in USD. The Board of Supervisors will vote on moving forward with starting the required five-year waiting period for USD following a public hearing on June 24. For more information about USD, including how to provide feedback, visit the USD webpage.
The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will be hosting a virtual town hall to discuss the proposed USD with the Dranesville District on Tuesday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m.
