- Fairfax County is considering a new approach to trash and recycling to improve service, reduce costs, and make neighborhoods cleaner and safer.
- Right now, most residents or HOAs hire their own private collector. That means a lot of different trucks on the same streets and not always consistent service.
- The County is looking at managing contracts directly, starting in 2030. This would be a county-run system called a Unified Sanitation District.
- The County currently provides service directly to ~10% of homes. Under a Unified Sanitation District the County would not provide direct service. It would all be provided by private collectors under County contracts.
