FILLING OUT YOUR GIFT LIST

The holiday season is upon us again and most of us are racking our brains trying to think of unique and special gifts to give to our friends and families. Why not give a gift that could be a lifesaver?

A smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, or portable escape ladder is an item most people will not purchase for themselves. What better way to show someone how much you care than by giving a gift that can save their life?

When purchasing a smoke alarm, choose the battery-operated kind. Buy some extra batteries as well. Why not include installation as part of your gift to assure it will be put up immediately? A screwdriver, two screws, and less than one-half hour of time is all it takes to install most models.

If you plan to give fire extinguishers, give the ABC multipurpose type. This type of extinguisher can be used on any small fire to extinguish it quickly. Make sure you take the time to explain the operation of the extinguisher to the recipient. Extinguishers are not difficult to operate, but you need to learn how to use them before the need arises. Fire extinguishers should be kept in homes, cars, boats, campers, and trailers.

Portable fire escape ladders should be kept in every bedroom above the ground floor to provide emergency escape routes. When purchasing escape ladders, look for a model that is long enough to reach ground level but light enough to be used by children.

When purchasing any of these life-saving gifts, be sure to look for the Underwriter's Laboratories label. The UL label means the device has passed certain safety tests.

While you're at it, do yourself a favor this holiday season. Be your own friend and buy one or all of these items for yourself.
