Fairfax County’s Martha Elena Coello Receives 2016 Transportation Achievement Award

At the Dec. 5, 2017, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission (TAC) honored Senior
Martha Coello
Martha Elena Martha, AICP, Senior Transportation Planner IV, FCDOT
Transportation Planner Martha Elena Coello with the 2016 Transportation Achievement Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievements in transportation; contributions advancing the objectives of the Fairfax County Transportation Plan; and enhancements to the quality of transportation in Fairfax County.

Martha began her career with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) in 2007 with a focus on transit-oriented development planning and implementation. She served in various roles promoting and implementing transit use, transit-oriented development, and multimodal-transportation projects in Fairfax County. This past year her efforts on the Silver Line project have been critical to advancing the county’s transportation objectives on a local and regional scale.
As a member of the Tysons Urban Core Planning Team, Martha coordinated the transit and transportation infrastructure to transform the Tysons Urban Area into a multi-modal transportation hub ensuring consistency with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) $5.8 billion Metrorail Silver Line extension.  She was directly involved in planning more than 100 million square feet of mixed-use transit oriented development with a goal of providing infrastructure for 100,000 new residents and 200,000 new jobs by 2050.

“Knowing the importance of looking at projects holistically, Martha considers the community as a whole - where people go and how they get there,” said Jeffrey Parnes, chair of the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission. “Of note is her ability to work with all the project partners to provide well-coordinated and integrated transportation systems for the region.”

Martha also worked to identify new bicycle and pedestrian links to eight new Metrorail stations in the county, identifying road and station access improvements, and coordinating bus infrastructure elements with the Fairfax Connector bus system. These efforts facilitate all modes of transportation with the upgrades to the transit system.

“Martha’s service to the county has been instrumental in advancing our transportation goals and objectives. Her work with all stakeholders provides for a seamless, coordinated process in integrating the transportation network of the Capital Region,” said FCDOT Special Projects Division Chief Mark Canale. “This has had a direct and lasting positive impact on improving the quality of the transportation infrastructure in the Fairfax County.”

This past September, Martha also received national recognition by Mass Transit Magazine as one of the Top 40 Under 40 transit professionals for her hard work and dedicated efforts in advancing transit-oriented land-use planning in the Capital Region and specifically in the Dulles and Tysons area of Fairfax County.  In addition, she was selected from a very competitive field to attend the Urban Land Institute’s Washington, D. C. Regional Land Use Leadership Institute Program, graduating this year after a nine-month program.

Martha received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Virginia and her Master’s Degree from  Virginia Tech. She is a member of the American Planning Association, Institute of Transportation Engineers and holds a certification as American Institute of Certified Planners.
