~First two weeks in January~

Christmas tree at CurbFairfax County, Va – Residents wondering what to do with their live Christmas trees at the end of the season can just remove all the decorations and leave them alongside their trash. The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Solid Waste Program will collect them during the first two weeks of January, from January 1 through January 13. The trees will be recycled, with the mulch made available to County residents.

At the end of the two-week collection period, residents serviced by the County can schedule a brush pick-up for trees. Those who utilize a private company should contact their hauler with questions regarding collection of Christmas trees following the two-week period for special tree collection.

There’s also the option for residents to self-haul holiday trees to one of our recycling facilities:

  • I-66 Transfer | 4618 West Ox Road
  • I-95 Landfill Complex | 9850 Furnace Road in Lorton

DPWES asks residents to dispose of tree lights in their recycling or trash because they get tangled in our machinery and their components are bad for the environment. They can also check with their local hardware store to find out if they will take the old lights. Broken tree lights can be dropped off at our e-waste disposal sites at the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex.
