Annandale, Va – Students, faculty and staff at Annandale Terrace Elementary School are gearing up for a big Arbor Day celebration on April 26, 2024, at 8:50 a.m. The event will take place simultaneously with the County’s 41st consecutive year being designated a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The recognition underscores Fairfax County's dedication to tree conservation and urban forestry.

As a highlight of the celebration, the Fairfax County Urban Forest Management Division has teamed up with Principal Ingrid Badia and the staff of Annandale Terrace Elementary School to orchestrate the Arbor Day ceremony. The ceremony will include participation from students, who will assist in planting the trees, along with a demonstration of dance and music.

Each year since 2021 the County’s Urban Forest Management Division has participated in Arbor Day planting events at local schools. It’s part of the Tree Preservation and Planting Fund, a grant program supported by the Board of Supervisors and administered by UFMD. By the end of May 2024, a total of 415 trees will have been planted at 24 schools. Annandale Terrace students helped plant 12 of those trees, enhancing the school environment and fostering sustainability.

Elected officials, school board members, Tree Commissioners, and other dignitaries also will participate in the event, contributing to the planting of a ceremonial tree as a symbol of the Arbor Day celebration.

Fairfax County remains steadfast in its commitment to bolstering and safeguarding the tree canopy across all neighborhoods, fortifying the county's climate resilience, and protecting the vitality of the urban forest.

The Tree Preservation and Planting Fund initiative extends its support to Fairfax County agencies, regional governmental bodies, and 501(C)(3) non-profit organizations.
