Fairfax County is celebrating Bike and Walk to Worship Week August 7-13, and your congregation is invited to participate!

Bike to Worship DisplayThis unique event is primarily driven at the congregational level, meaning you and your leadership team can create the celebration that best suits your members who bike or walk. For example:

  • organize a group ride to morning prayers
  • include a “blessing of the bikes” in worship services
  • host a prayer walk in your area or provide refreshments to those who bike or walk to an event at your place of worship.

The Fairfax County Bicycle and Pedestrian team will support your efforts by providing a toolkit document, branding for your event, and advice on bike routes and safety. In addition, Fairfax County Department of Transportation will promote your participation in Bike & Walk to Worship Week on the Fairfax County Transportation Facebook page. Participating congregations will also be eligible to win prizes.

Bike and Walk to Worship Week is a great program for committees whose mission is:

  • Environmental: Bicycling and walking has a positive impact on the environment and can help relieve overcrowded parking lots!
  • Health and wellness: Healthy members lead to strong congregations.
  • Fellowship and family-building: This is an activity that families can do together, building memories.
  • Equity: Promote safe, affordable, and accessible transportation options for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

If you are interested in championing biking and walking for your congregation in this way, please email bikefairfax@fairfaxcounty.gov to participate.
