On December 7, 2021, the Board of Supervisors tasked the 2021 Redistricting Advisory Committee with evaluating whether any of Fairfax County's magisterial districts should be renamed. The Committee published its final report in March of 2022, which recommended that the Board consider renaming Sully District.
Following this report, Supervisor Smith held public meetings on June 2 and September 1 of 2022 to gather feedback from community members. Supervisor Smith then presented a Board Matter during the Board of Supervisors meeting on November 1, 2022, to announce that the Sully District name will not be changed at this time. At each of the two community meetings, county staff gave presentations on the history of the Sully Historic Site and name and on the origin and establishment of the Sully District in 1991.
