Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Maria Demarest, Family Liaison and Supporter Goes "Above and Beyond"

Submitted by xlschwa on Thu, 10/13/2022 - 8:44 am

As a family liaison at Bailey's Elementary School, Maria Demarest provides assistance, information, and connection to resources for students and their families. But the impact of Maria's work is clear and goes far beyond what may normally be expected from her role.

Maria Demarest, Family Liaison, Bailey's Elementary School. During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Health Department is spotlighting 'everyday people' of public health - individuals making a difference in neighborhoods and communities across Fairfax County.

Maria's dedication to her community is unending and wide-reaching. Throughout her 32 years of working with Fairfax County Public Schools, Maria has started and supported a variety of initiatives aimed at supporting families and engaging the community. For example, Maria is one of the founders of a Bailey's Elementary School initiative that provides clothing for newcomers and people in need of warm coats, and other items, for the winter. She helps drive and organize donations for this initiative and participates actively in community collaboration. Further, she finds sources for funds so that children who need them will be able to participate in organized sports. Maria is also involved in the flourishing and beautiful community garden at Bailey's Elementary; she encourages parents and students to actively participate and become a part of the program.

"Her role as a family liaison is only 30% of the work she does for her community," said Claudia Morcelo, community outreach and engagement supervisor, Fairfax County Health Department.

Maria consistently advocates for her community. She attends meetings, that often include police officials, local community leaders and politicians, as well as others, where she provides her voice to the challenges faced by immigrants in the area. Maria helps newcomers get acclimated, find work, and navigate complexities in the system so all can obtain necessary resources. When COVID-19 vaccines became available, Maria virtually taught people how to make vaccine appointments so they could book them for themselves and their families.

All of these actions highlight a key aspect of Maria's work: engaging others, promoting collaboration, and enabling community involvement. "Maria gives, but she also teaches," said Claudia. "She equips people with what they need to help themselves and contribute to their community."
