CALL TO ORDER:

Commission Chair Crawford called the Wednesday, August 2, 2023, Commission Meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.

Approval of AgendaIt was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Malik that the August 2, 2023, Agenda be approved as presented.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.  

Approval of MinutesIt was moved by Commissioner Bhinge and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the August 2nd, 2023 minutes be approved as amended. The motion passed by majority vote, with Commissioners Conde and Bokhari abstaining.

 

STAFF ISSUES: Director Kenneth Saunders introduced newly appointed Commissioner, Adan Bokhari to the Human Rights committee.

COMMISSION BUSINESS

HRC# 2022038H- FIR:  It was moved by Commissioner Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that this complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Fairfax County Fair Housing Act has occurred consistent with the recommendation of the motion passed by majority vote, with commissioners Bhinge and Conde abstaining.

Commission Initiated Testing Complaints:

Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. Carlyn Hill Properties LLC et al. : -- It was moved by Commissioner Conde and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the Commission approve that the initiated complaint be filed with OHREP.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.

Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. PP Ridgeline Investors LLC et al - -- It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Conde that the Commission approve that the initiated complaint be filed with OHREP.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.

Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. Fairfax Village Apartments et al.- It was moved by Commissioner Conde and seconded by Commissioner Malik that the Commission approve that the initiated complaint be filed with OHREP.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.

Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. Hillwood Manor Apts. RLLP et al. - It was moved by Commissioner Ashby and seconded by Commissioner Bokhari that the Commission approve that the initiated complaint be filed with OHREP.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.

Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. Mid-America Apartments LP - It was moved by Commissioner Ashby and seconded by Commissioner Crawford that the Commission approve that the initiated complaint be filed with OHREP.  The motion passed by unanimous vote.

 

COMMUNITY CONCERNS:  Housing Specialist Amanda Schlener will have an update on the August 16th commission training and will send out a reminder.  

PENDING BUSINESS: former commissioner Bell- Krasner would like to ask to be put on the agenda for the September 20th commission meeting, to present his updates on the Fairfax County 250th committee. The commissioner voted to be put on agenda as tentative.

Commissioner Crawford informed the commission that the Virginia Association of Human Rights will be having a meeting on September 23rd – 24th   being held in Virginia Beach. She will send out information to Amanda so that she can share with the commissioners.
