Early Childhood Supply and Access Gaps

Providing access to affordable, quality early childhood education is a two-generational strategy which supports parents’ workforce participation while also preparing young children for lifelong success.  Young children who begin kindergarten with a strong social, emotional, and cognitive foundation are more likely to do well in school, become employed and less likely to experience negative health factors.  Expanding the County’s equitable early childhood system advances the goal of the Board of Supervisors to ensure that every child in Fairfax County has equitable opportunities to thrive.

To support efforts to increase access to both part-time and full-time early childhood programming, staff developed a suite of maps that provide an overview of the supply of early childhood programs throughout the County. The child care supply map identifies areas where additional capacity is needed, including overlays with race and ethnicity, median household income and other factors to consider in system planning. This mapping tool, combined with input from families, will inform future programming and capital expansions.
